Show THE MURRAY EAGLE THE MURRAY EAGLE C. B. WALLACE, Editor EDNA M. WALLACE, Associate Editor Issued every Thursday 35 Telephone Murray at the Entered ns second elms matter February 8, 1927, Suit Lake City, Utah, under Act of March 3, 1879. .50 Elsewhere in Unltod States One Year In advance $1.50 HIGHWAYS WITHOUT BILLBOARDS It seems almost too good to he true, yet a dispatch from Washington says that the Federal Government at laxt la golug to do aoraethlng about Mlllmnnls. Wherever possible, the Public Works Administration Is going to see that roads constructed with federal money are built on 150 feet ho that trees and natural screening which exist may be kept and new screening may be planted where It does not exist. Driving along these roads of the future, our eyes will rest on cool, green foliage, Bear-le- t dogwood, tall pines or eucalyptus and not someone's blaring bid for our money. s These wider will provide room for footpaths where In safety as well. Planted on either side, they walk pedestrians may will protect the road from soil enwlon as well as sheltering It from heat and cold. More fundamental reforms than Ibis are Issuing from Washington, but few which fills us with greater satisfaction. Helena, (Mont.) right-of-way- s, right-of-way- KIDNAPING Insurance against kidnaping INSURANCE Is growing In the United States, lent company is allowed by Its charter to strangely enough, no American write it. It Is being taken out In England, a country that has never had a case of kidnaping for ransom In all its history. Colliers. Should you be so unfortunate as to have kidnapers seize some member of your family, pick up the telephone and ask for National 7117 at Washington, I). C. That Is the inmiler of a social wire in the Department of Justice, only recently Installed. Agents sit by It for 21 hours a day, ready to throw the resources of the federal government toward the rescue of victims of the most cruel form of crime to which rackHteers have applied their talents. RUNNING TRUB TO FORM No reader of dally papers in large cities falls to note that wholesale and retail liquor dealers are running true to form. A year ago they were assuring the country that a repeal of national prohibition would fill the coffers of the public treasury and Insure large reductions In all characters of taxation. Undoubtedly many people voted to repeal the Eighteenth Amendment because of the revenue argument. . . . How Is It now that people have voted for repeal to shift taxes from themselves to liquor manufacturers and dealers? The dealers are now threatening the Federal Government by this ultimatum: "If taxes are high bootleggers and moonshiners will continue. Give a low tax or submit to a continuation of Illegal making and selling of Intoxicants." The truth Is that from the the liquor business has been lawless and disreputable. This does not mean that all manufacturers or dealers are dishonest. Those brewers who are satisfied to run their breweries without also becoming owners or barkers of wilwuis pay their taxes. The same was true formerly of some dWtillers who had no connection with saloons. Put It Is the acme of Impudence for those asking license to Issue an ultimatum to government to levy a low tax on the corrupting business under penalty of wholesale moonshlnlng and bootlegging. The liquor dealers are running true to form. News and Observer, Raleigh. X. C. THE MEANEST RACKET Slot machines are America's meanest racket and the most unnecessary. Many are represented to be vendors of merchandise, and when shopkeeiers get Into legal difficulties the Industry Is represented by wily lawyers who put up that defense. The plain fact is. however, that most of them are not rending machines, hut simply gambling devices. It Is said the annual Intake from slot machines In New York City alone has Isvn esttlmatcd In excess of $25.(KX,(si0, and it Is said that some 3U0 machines are In operation. But other American cities and towns are facing the menace, and It may well receive the attention of police departments everywhere. One magazine rnvntly said: "Aside from the purely moral Issue on gambling, the slot machine racket Is particularly vicious. Players, often lured to sis-nentire weeks' wages In a vain quest for easy money, haven't a slight chance to win on the modernized machines . . .The machines are built to take money, not to give it. Police files are filled with tearful complaints of pa rents that their children stole pennies or savings funds to play the machines, while many wives have had to do without the week's grocery budget because their husbands lost their week's ray trying to win more." Of course the surest way to eliminate the machines would I to starve them out. People ran do this If they will stop "playing" them. Until they do. the only way to stop this exploitation of human weakness Is to dirve them out. In these days when there is not money enough to buy bread, the Installation of slot machines to tempt jennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters from children and the needy as well as others, certainly makes slot machines the meanest racket. Granite hadn't been defeated in any game last year nor in any game this year till Murray gave them the surprise of their lives. Everyone thought that Granite could surely defeat a weak team like Murray, but overconfldence wins no Our team recognized this game. that fact and were determined Granite should fight und fight hard to defeat them. The school was back of the team, cheering ns only Murray Students can cheer. Whenever Murray got a basket, one would have thought the students were going crazy. For the victory over Granite, Murray gives credit to two factors; (1) the determination and fight of the team, and (2) the support of the baud, student body, and faculty. Granite High was to have sent their assembly to Murray last Friday, but failed to do so. For this reason the Shipmates under the di rection of Fred Anderson, had a last minute assembly to prepare. Several very fine numbers were rendered, und the last half of the assembly was in the form of a pep rally. Defeating Granite High was something the students couldn't overlook. The faculty also thought we at least ought to have a short matinee dance to show our appreciation to the team. Monday a short pep sembly was given with a matinee dance following.
