Show A , VOL.37 No. II AND MIDDLE JOURNAL , ' t f r-- Established 1892 Murray City; Utah, Thursday, August 25, 927 1 Why Murray Shouli b e Concrete Paved .v Murray, the southern gateway to the metropolii of Utah. The city whose main street not only carries the traffic of the state but of the nation as well.- State statistics show that there are more cars travel State street daily, between Salt Lake and Mid vale Junction than on any other similar stretch of highway in Utah. This traffic too, is not only hefvy, speedy and voluminous but is also increasing in volume day bV day. The people of Murray with characteristic enterprise and a desire to beautify their city, al well as to place it on a par with other progressive communities f equal size and importance, have decided to pave their main street from curb to curb through their business district. 'It is quite natural then that it should be their desire to pave it properly, economically and well, and with a material in which they have implicit confidence and which is a one hundred pef cent Utah product. The people of Murray are strong in the be'ief that "WHAT UTAH MAKES, MAKES UTAH." Therefore, in their practically unanimous desire for portland cement concrete pavement, similar to that with which the street is already partly paved, they have the following in mind : First, durability.' Second, uniformity ot "strength and appearance. Third, surface over which it is both safe and a smooth, even, skid-prodrive. to They wah,t a pavement that when properly pleasurable constructed will "stay put," thai', won't rut and roll, and which will be easily and economically maintained. A pavement that will always be a credit to the city that built it, and a monument to the honesty of purpose and good judgement 6f those personally responsible for its selection and construction. In specifying concrete only, for Murray's new pavement, our city officials can be assured of plenty of genuine competition. Salt Lake specified concrete only, for North Temple street and not only secured the keenest of competition but the most beautifully paved street within its confines beside.. That city also-- specified concrete only, for South Main street, as did also the county for its portion of this project, and there were many bidders in both cases. The state also specified concrete only, for the work just commencing in Davis county and secured the best of competition. In fact, competition is always much keener where one type is specified, as is amply exemplified in the experience of Logan and Provo where only concrete is called for. . The concensus of opinion, as expressed by a very great majority of our business men to a committee of the Lion's Gub, is to the effect that concrete only, should be included in the specifications for the paving of our main street. It is believed that by so doing, the officials will be complying with the wishes of the people, of the city as. a whole. ..Thai, there will be less opportunity, for. complications, confusion, arguments and delay. That it will be much preferable in every way to decide before hand just what we want and then get it. Why include types that are now more or less obselete, and upon which must be paid royalties and premiums for no other purpose than the privelege of laying it? and progressive. They IT e people-of- , Murray are want to make their city reflect that spirit, and nothing has a greater, trend toward that end than well paved streets. Over eighty percent of the highways of the nation that are now be,ing paved with federal aid, are being paved with portland cement concrete. Our officials can make no mistake in calling for bids on this type only. . LOCALS - Salt Lake Man Weds Popular Murray Girl The wedding ceremony uniting Miss and Mrs. W. Mr. L. Martin F.lli.
