Show PYRAMID THE 2 Thursday, December 2, 2004 Booking report Appalling ethics at large retail store Dear Editor: was recently shocked and dismayed to hear of some appalling happenings taking place at the largest retail store in Ephraim. I learned that some customers have been asked to leave the store and some have even been bodily removed for writing down or keeping track of prices. Those of us older citizens, as well as others on a tight budget, do this on a regular basis to avoid embarrass I ment at the check out counter. What are they afraid of? I have never had this happen in any other store, anywhere! Especially that they had best look for other work because THEIR store was out to close them down. Again, SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! I, for one will not step foot inside this establishment again. When they opened in Sanpete. I dont know if this is a policy or not, but should be ashamed of themselves! That single day was an awfully long day though. Flying from west to east we arrived in California BEFORE we left Taiwan. (Figure that out. Of course its a time-zon- e thing, but it made me wonder if I could stay on an airplane flying around the globe and never age.) My son is going to high school in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for a semester. He comes home in January so we figured it made sense to trip on over and see what there was to see and eat. There was plenty to see and TONS to eat. They wouldnt stop feeding us; a and despite what you might think, Pigs Ear is quite tasty. This was my first trip to Asia, so I had my eyes opened to a whole different world. And you know me, I like to compare new places I visit with Sanpete. One of the first things I noticed in Taiwan was the very trusting and courageous drivers. (You could substitute the words crazy and wild.) The amazing thing is that a high percentage of these drivers are on motor scooters. In Sanpete we have trusting and courageous drivers as well. Sometimes we call these drivers farmers and college professors. (No letters please. Some of my favorite people are farmers and teachers.) d Chinese traditions. It Taiwan adheres to was made clear to me that I was to sit in the front seat with our driver. Its a patriarchal thing. Kids (though grown) and women, are supposed to stay in the back. (We broke this rule a few times.) It was also made clear that we shouldnt attempt to pay for meals or admission fees to tourist places when in tHe presence of our host. The traditional Chinese host will take care of everything. And he did, despite protests, Here in Sanpete, we have time honored pioneer traditions. As I think about it, I remember that my mother-in-laalways wanted me to sit in the front seat with her husband. Im not sure whether she had any Chinese ancestry or not. Im thinking maybe she did. She got very angry with me two or three years ago when I maneuvered my way to the head of the line at our Thanksgiving buffet dinner in Mesquite and paid for the meal. She was hot because it was not my place to do their job. We do like to take care of our visitors here in Sanpete. I believe though, I could personally adopt some Chinese hospitality traits and do a little bit better job of it. The people in Taiwan are among the friendliest people Ive met anywhere. They have terrific smiles ana dancing eyes. On the occasion of a flat tire on my rented time-honore- w scooter on the rugged east coast of the island, people stopped and helped. We were taken to a fix-i- t shop. Three dollars and minutes later, we were back on the road racing to make our train departure. When we were helped with the tire, my wife said, Its like were back in Sanpete. People in Sanpete ARE friendly and willing to help strangers. Its not everywhere in the world where that exists. Not everything was totally wonderful in Taiwan. The reality of life is that there are positives and negatives. And that's true of anyplace, including Sanpete. Taiwans cities have air pollution. Its quite bad and many people, especially scooter drivers, wear masks similar to surgical masks whenever they are out and about. Sometimes there are less than desirable odors which are encountered. When you have a huge population city (two million in Kaohsiung), there are going to be some odors here and there. Sanpete, some days, in some places, has some air pollution. And, some days, in some places, Sanpete has some less than desirable odors. Once again Ive proved that you can get to anywhere in the world from right here in little ol Sanpete. And once again, Sanpete has something in common with another foreign place and culture. But, really - that shouldnt be surprising. People are people the world over, and most of the time they want good things for each other. Merrill and Girl Scouts join Boy Market news to battle drug abuse 10.00-12.0- 1 Holy Toledo! Who turned the thermostat down while I was gone? Man alive - Sanpete is in a deep freeze. As we used to say, its so cold it would freeze wings off a brass seagull (or something to that effect). I just got back from Thanksgiving in Taiwan, just in time to meet my last chance, absolute deadline, for the tolerant Pyramid staff. Ive been in southern Taiwan for the past week. Thats on the same latitude as Havana, Cuba. Now you know why Im complaining about the sudden temperature change. Ive gone from papaya milk to hot chocolate in a Nov. 23 Fax USPS No. ily in the Manti LaSal National Forest, have been marked and carefully mapped to ensure that riders rind their way around the 370 miles that make up the trail system. The trail system was recently redesigned and includes bridges, culverts and water bars. Another draw is Fairview Canyon. The paved canyon road leads to a trail head that provides access to more than 60 miles of trails to the north at Skyline Drive and some 30 miles to the south to Joes Valley. Snowmobiling has long been a huge benefit for Sanpete County. It contributes by means of snowmobilers eating in local restaurants, staying in hotels, bed and breakfasts and visiting stores and shops and boosting business. The "Scouts Fighting Drug Abuse Online Patch Program" aims to teach Scouts about the dangers of substance abuse. It is believed to be the nation's first joint patch program between the two Scouting organizations. Scouts can earn the patch by going to a website to learn about the risks of drug use, community resources and ways to deal with peer pressure. The program was developed by another unique partnership between the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Utah Attorney General's Office; The Scouts who take a short time to earn this drug-fre- e patch could avoid a lifetime of misery," says Mark Shurtleff, Utah Attorney The patch requirements are age related and include: gathering information from various websites; designing g posters; completing safety quizzes and pledges; locating the school's DARE or police officer; watching TV shows and counting the references to illegal drugs; and interviewing detectives, doctors and drug treatment providers for an article about substance anti-dru- 1 tions.
