Law enforcement officers can now send the alert out within seconds instead of minutes. This was the first time Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) used new software that allows the alerts to go up instantly on all 61 electronic message signs. During the first test, UDOT operators put the message up one sign at a time. The test is held twice a year to find ways to improve the plan so that the alert goes out as quickly as possible to as many people as NAPS-- - only things blooming when the weather warms. he beauty of the season also brings a nuisance for anyone who lies to be outside, mosquitos. Fortunately, a few control measures now can reduce the number of mosquitoes in the yard all season. Take the following steps to lower mosquito populations and protect everyone in the fami I possible. The plan is designed to be redundant so people will be notified even if part of the system fails. During this test, it was discovered that Verizon subscribers did not receive the alert because the company had changed the code for its pagers. Some media members didn't receive the alerts on their pagers but did get notified through the EAS system. Contact Gina McMahon at BCI at gmcmahonutah.gov if anyone has registered to receive the alert but did not get it during the test. Also, UDOT is looking at ways to make the plan even more redundant for its operators to ensure they are notified instantly. Utah is fortunate to have Joann Autry, Elaine Runyan-Simmon- s and Katharine Whitney with us during the test to remind us why AMBER Alerts are so important. Everyone on the AMBER Alert Advisory Committee wants to give their appreciation for participating in the test. The media plays a vital role in bringing abducted children home. Enterprise award PROVO- - Congressman Chris Cannon was awarded the 2004 'Spirit of Enterprise award recently at the ProvoOrem Chamber of Commerce. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce gives the award to members of Congress who support a legislative agenda. "Business is the engine of our nation's economy," Cannon said. With President Bush in the White House, Republicans in Congress have been able to pass landmark legislation that have helped fuel the prosperity of America's businesses. I'm proud to have worked with others in Congress fighting for the heart of our communities, and thrilled to receive this award for doing so." "As America's economy continues to expand, the importance of supporting policies in Congress becomes increasingly clear," said Thomas J. Donohue, Chamber President and CEO. "Chris Cannon is a leader who time and again has supported legislation to create jobs, increase productivity and strengthen our nation's recovering economy." Dick Castner, Executive Director of the Western Regional Office for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, presented Cannon with the award. "Congressman Cannon has shown that he supports the better jobs, the increased productivity and the solid economic growth which go with the success of American business. If all members of Congress voted like Chris Cannon, the economy would be stronger, government less intrusive and our future more secure," Castner said. The Chamber awards the Spirit of Enterprise based on rankings it gives members of Congress for key business votes, setout in its annual publication, How They Voted. Key votes are recorded floor votes on issues established as priorities by the Chamber's board of directors on which the chamber communicates its position prior to the vote. Members of Congress who support the chamber's position on at least 70 percent of key votes receive the Spirit of Enterprise Award. Cannon earned a 97 percent score with the Chamber last year and has compiled a 95 percent cumulative rating during his tenure in Congress. "We've passed some important business legislation in the House, but there is more work to be done," Cannon said. "I'll continue to fight in Congress to permanently eliminate the capital gains tax and the death tax, tear down regulatory barriers to job creation and work toward a approach of health care. I am confident that passing this type of legislation will help America's economy continue to be the strongest in the world." h pro-growt- hand-in-han- r- c ? - e SOAPBOX DERBY Mfkkp e in warmer pear parts of the country. year-roun- To combat mosquitoes, p m, (iOM)UIUUi i hoo-ti r.u it ui (I , www. t KOOihecnHlc.cont Min , &' Manti Temple Hill, Manti, Utah (begins at dusk) STEEL ROOFING & SIDING MSJlf Huge Selection - Save Your $$ - Call Today!
