Show Page Eight - The Pyramid - December 4, 2003 Joint library Wasatch Academy NHS will not happen Christmas Project Sponsors for Ephraim presents in the past few years, and hundreds of local families have benefitted from this service project. Last year, NHS donated all the money earned during the Christmas season to purchase food for distribution to families in the Sanpete valley area. It was also able to donate more than $1 ,500 and 50 boxes of food to the Food Bank. This year, rather than contributing Christmas gifts to local families, NHS has been asked to again sponsor a food drive to help stock the shelves of the Food Bank. The Food Bank is serving more than 600 families each month, up from 450 families a year ago, putting a tremendous strain on the Food Banks budget, and donations have not kept up with the demand. Unemployment is at an all time high in Sanpete County, especially with the recent closure of some of the local mines and a decline in the logging business. The Food Bank is in desperate need of food this year to feed these families in need. On Thursday, Nov. 20, MT. PLEASAN- T- The Wasatch Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) is again sponsoring its annual Christmas Service Project, and encourages everyone in the area who may be interested in helping those in need to support this project. would NHS sincerely appreciate your support and contribution in helping local families in need! Keri Rhodes, NHS advisor, challenged the students, staff, and faculty to bring at least $1 and one food item to the dinner, encouraging them to contribute more than the $200 dollars raised at last years Thanksgiving dinner. The next day, NHS advisors Keri and Tom Rhodes were able to deliver six large boxes of food, as well as $450, to the Food Bank! After Thanksgiving, NHS members will attend a Mt. PLEASAN- T- Mike Spencer won the state Motocross Championship in the Over 40 Class competing against nearly 50 other riders. The Utah Sportsman Riders Association (USRA) hosts several races around the state at tracks in Ogden, Tooele, Delta, Price, Beaver, Cedar City and St. George. Mike won 18 of the 24 races held this year. Motocross is motorcycle racing on a dirt course that is about miles in length with a variety of jumps, bumps, turns, sand, mud and hills. No two tracks are alike and usually a particular track is changed from year to year. Motocross is about variety and riders like to keep it interesting and challenging. Combine all this with 20 to 30 riders all going as fast as they dare for several laps and it makes for some pretty exciting racing. Its like a roller coaster ride but you control how thrilling it is, Mike says. Crashes fre happen quently and are often the result of fatigue. Its a very physically demanding sport. After several laps, riders get what is commonly known as arm pump which is when the forearms pump up from hanging on to the motorcycle making it harder to hang on. Mike broke a rib at a race in Cedar City last June. 1 had a decent lead and on the last lap I decided to jump this triple jump that I jumped . a couple of times during practice. I over jumped it a bit and landed so hard that I crashed. I think my bike hit me in the back while I was tumbling. There were only three more turns until the checkered flag so I was scrambling to get my bike going and stay in the lead. I won, barely, but still had another race that day and two more the next day. I raced anyway, despite the broken rib, to maintain my points. I won those too, but it sure hurt. That was probably the biggest challenge this year," said Mike.
