Show Page Six - The Pyramid - December 4, 2003 Utah post offices ready to deliver the holidays 20 percent of all collisions happen in parking lots SALT LAKE CITY-- - In anticipation of the busiest shopping days of the year, AAA Utah tips to help drivers avoid fender benders or injuries that take the glow off the holidays. know about "People safety on the highways and neighborhood streets, but they forget to be alert in parking lots," said Rolayne Fairclough, AAA Utah spomall-bou- keswoman. "Crashes happen frequently in parking lots and have the potential to be quite dangerous, particularly for pedestrians." The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 20 percent of all collisions resulting in damage claims occur in parking lots. AAA Utah offers the following tips to help motorists navigate the parking lot and make safe decisions to protect their cars and themselves. Head for the side door. At the mall, everyone wants to park near the stores, especially the main entrance. But most malls have secondary entrances on the sides and those entrances usually have less traffic and more convenient spaces. Learn to play the outfield. Outlying areas of the parking lots have more spaces, lighter traffic and lower risk of collision. In some cases these spaces may not be as secure, so be aware of the risks. Also, be aware that outlying spaces are sometimes narrower than the closer spots. This can mean a dinged door or difficulty pulling in and out. See and be seen. Use your headlights when scouring parking garages for spaces, even in the daylight. Your lights will let other cars see you coming around turns and can make fitting into tight parking spaces a little easier. Research shows that keeping your headlights on reduces your crash risk, even in daytime. Dont put yourself in a Avoid parking between a pair of tall SUVs or minivans where it might be hard for you to back out of the space. tight spot. If you cant see well enough to back out safely, get help from one of your passengers. Refrain from reverse. If possible, avoid backing out of a space by either backing into it or "pulling through" two spaces that are open nose-to-nos- e. In some municipalities, however, backing into spaces amid moving traffic is illegal and, by impeding traffic flow, can sometimes do more harm than good. Look out for little ones. Children can be hard to see SALT in busy parking lots and often make quick, unpredictable movements. When walking to and from the car, hold their hands to keep them safe from traffic. Stay alert on foot. Pedestrians should use walkways and crosswalks, if available. If you must walk in the traffic lanes, be alert for subtle clues, such as car exhaust or reverse lights, that signal a car is about to pull out. When behind the wheel, always be on the lookout for pedestrians, especially children. hard-to-s- ee Dont let the grinch steal your gifts. Place packages and shopping bags in the trunk so they wont be visible to would-b- e thieves. It takes a thief just seconds to smash a window and steal your gifts. Buckle up. Even a low-specollision can result in injuries. Make sure that everyone is strapped in a seat belt or child safety seat while the car is in motion, even if its just a short trip to another part of the parking lot. "Drivers should always be aware of their surroundings," said Fairclough. "The holidays are a busy time for everyone, but remember that when you are behind the wheel, your focus should be on driving, where youre on the highway or in a parking ed lot." For years, the doctor has been telling women to take hormones, that its good for them and that it will make them feel younger, even look younger. Now the doctors are telling women to stop. What can they do? Sound familiar? For years doctors have believed that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was good. The truth is that HRT still has a place for postmenopausal women, but in a more limited role. Current recommendations for HRT are for short-teruse in only three situations: Relief of moderate to severe hot flashes and night sweats; relief of moderate to severe symptoms of infections; and m prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis when therapies have been carefully considered. non-estrog- If a woman has stopped HRT or is thinking about going off HRT, its important to know that they may experience significant bone about three-to-fiv- e loss, percent bone loss per year, after discontinuing HRT. Bone loss could lead to serious disosteoporosis, ease affecting more than 10 million Americans, of which 80 percent are women. Another 30 million Americans have low bone mass, a precursor to osteoporosis. When left untreated, osteoporosis can weaken bones, which could lead to fraca tures. If a woman has stopped HRT therapy, are considering discontinuing HRT therapy, or if they think they may be at risk for osteoporosis, then they should consider Moroni Irrigation Company Annual Meeting Tuesday, January 6, postmenopausal, of sian or Asian heritage, having a small, thin frame, having a family history of osteoporosis, leading an inactive lifestyle, smoking, excessive use of alcohol and having a diet low in calcium. The best way to test bone density is by a DXA scan, or low level of the hip and spine. The baseline score can determine if there is a need for medication to protect the bones. Some women may only need calcium and exercise, others may require treatment with appropriate medications. There are five therapies for osteoporosis. And men view their family wealth, stocks, bonds, home equity, etc., as 10 percent higher than wives do. Also, wives believe that family debts are about $500 higher than husbands. This "disconnect" could lead to problems when it comes to making important savings and investment decisions. For example, husbands, operating under inflated assumptions of income and assets, may be more inclined to spend, rather than save. Conversely, wives, concerned about higher debts and lower income and resources, may favor more conservative investments. In fact, other studies have shown that this may well be true. Of course, in anyones it individual situation, be not particularly might helpful to generalize on how husbands and wives think differently about saving and investing. Nonetheless, to make sure you and your spouse are working together toward your common longterm financial goals, you may want to consider the following suggestions: Review your finances regularly - Dont assume that you and your spouse know the exact same things about your income, savings and investments. Take the time to "put all your cards on the table." And do it regularly, because things change all the time - one of you may get a raise, one of you has noticed something unusual in your investment statement, etc. If you work with an investment professional who conducts regular reviews of your financial situation, you and your spouse have the perfect i : ; ; ' Click-N-Shi- Communication ber of married couples may think they communicate well, only to discover that they have radically different ideas about one of the most important aspects of their life together - their , money. Discuss your goals With careers, kids and all the activities of everyday life, you and your spouse may not have a lot of time to discuss topics such as retirement, college funding finanand other long-tercial goals. But you need to make the time. If you each have different conceptions of your ultimate financial destinations, youll have a hard time agreeing on the proper strategies for getting there. Make sure each of you knows when the other would like to retire, what sort of retirement lifestyle you envision, what kind of contributions youre thinking of for your childrens college education, etc. Reach common ground - If you and your spouse have different investment personalities, you may well have to find some "common ground." That is, if one of you is an "aggressive" investor, while the other is "conservative," you might have to chart a course that is considered "moderate." If one of you is unhappy with the way you are investing as a couple, then nobody really comes out -- m ahead. Keep accessible your records - In some mar- riages, one partner manag- es the finances so comthat the other pletely even know doesnt spouse how to find the investment statements, tax records and other documents. That is a recipe for disaster - if something were to happen to the spouse, the other one could face big delays in taking control of assets. By following these basic suggestions, you and your much-neede- d spouse can work together to make continual progress toward your objectives. And, as you know from any endeavor in life, any job is easier when people pull in the same direction.
