Addiction to drugs or alcohol often occur after only a few uses, crimes are then committed to support the habit. Pickett promised to take a stand against drug dealers, but believes that it is everyones responsibility to see that drugs are driven our-o- f the county. There are many signs of drug use, users could be awake for two or three days and then sleep' for two or three days getting up' only to eat. Grades tend to gof down, and children may start hanging around other kids who use. Pickett stated that when people are willing to quit drugs or alco-- -. hoi, they need to have help to' kick the habit. At the conclusion of Picketts talk Doug Sterger. told his story of drug addiction. A panel of six recovering addicts and alcoholics each told stories of loss and recovery and-thetook questions from n The general consensus of the panel was that use of drugs and alcohol is such a serious and life threatening problem that every member of the community needs to be involved in fighting the problem. Families need to confront members about drug abuse and domestic violence, and law enforcement may need to be contacted. All six panel members said that involvement with law enforcement helped bring them around, and motivated them to get help. Pickett stated that family members are more important than an altercation with the law. Identity fraud risin; New venturing program offers challenge to scouts Senior citizens tance of victims to file complaints, or to withdraw after the fight has ended. It is easier for people to file a complaint when a fight is going on, but when things calm down and the "honeymoon phase" of the violence cycle is in effect people drop complaints. Sometimes, it just isnt reported when it occurs, most likely due to fear of repercussion, or concern about having to testify. The law currently states that the aggressor or, "predominate aggressor" is to go to jail. Pickett stated its out of line for men to beat women or vice versa. He also said although it is not as common, he has seen men who have been abused by their wives. If children are to understand its not okay to abuse people, abusers should go to jail. The law has also been changed to take the burden of testifying, in order to prosecute a case, off the shoulders of the victim. Once a case is investigated and is deemed valid, the victims additional testimony is not needed in order to prosecute. Pickett also discussed drugs and alcohol, he stating that there is a serious drug problem in Sanpete County, and no one is immune to the problem. Drug abuse affects all ages and economic levels. Over 1 million dollars worth of drugs come into the county every year. He named as Sanpetes methamphetamine number one drug problem, followed by cocaine and marijuana.
