Show Page Four - The Pyramid - September 1, 1999 Advancements make garage doors safer and snow blowers disposals combined were the third highest. Of the approximately 10,000 injuries related to garage doors, one-thir- d were sustained by children. "How does one keep kids from riding the garage door?" asks Dave Martin, owner and chairman of Martin Door Manufacturing of Salt Lake City. "Theyre just kids. But there are ways to keep children from getting injured." And that wa what Martin set out to do, develop new safety features on all of his companys doors to prevent serious injuries, both to children and adults. In February 1995, after meeting with one of his dealers in England, Martin, a self-maengineer and inventor, realized the extreme need for some kind of finger protection against the doors large section joints, which when closed, create nearly 1 ,000 pounds per square inch of LAKE CIT- Y- To many children, a garage door may seem like an amusement park ride. While one child pushes the remote control button another one grabs and holds onto the door riding it up and down. Yet as the door comes down and a child puts a hand in one of the section joints to keep balance, hands become entrapped and are crushed. SALT For more information concerning the new Martin Doors available, contact Dennis Roberts, local dealer, at (435) 436-878- 3. According to a seven-yesurvey compiled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in 1996, garage door-relate- d Finger injuries were ar de the household injury, sending close to 10,000 people to the emergency room. second-highe- st Knife-relate- d finger injuries were the highest, while injuries caused by lawnmowers, garbage on garage doors' was dangerous and could cause serious injury or even death. "We didnt know anything else other than that the section joints were a problem until this meeting," Martin explained. "I was so proud of the new product while sitting in that meeting. We were pretty much the only ones in America offering it. However, they pointed fingers at all of us and said that we ought to be ashamed of ourselves for the spring system that we have and the holes in the tracks." Once again, Martin went to work, this time developing an additional eight new safety features. One area of great concern was the torsion spring. With the old version, the spring was center-mounte- d above the door, increasrisk the of injury for ing when especially trying to tighten a loose screw while the springs were still wound. "The dealer greeted us with his arm in a sling and his hand in a cast," says Martin. "He was in a hurry and had put his hand in a section joint of a garage door and closed it down, breaking all of the fingers of his hand." Martin explains that although there are warning labels stating to keep fingers away from the joint, trapping hands and fingers inside the joint is still a common mistake, particularly when there is a power outage and owners are not familiar with how to manually open the automatic garage door. After returning from England, Martin and his engineering team began a crash program to develop what is called the Martin Finger Shield, a flap that covers the door joint, preventing fingers from entering. A year later Martin realized the need for additional safety features on the doors. At a meeting in July 1996, with the CPSC and other manufacturers, he was told that the spring system used Bowling news by Kathy Shelley Several lady bowlers from the area placed in bowling tournaments held during the summer. The word barometer is rived from the greek word baros, or weight. Thus a barometer is a device for measuring the weight 0f atmosphere. ed "We have moved our springs off on the side and locked them onto the track system," says Martin. The old bottom roller brackets, which hold all of the spring could be unfastened tension, under full spring tension, resulting in injury. The new bottom while roller brackets lock-o- n under spring tension and cannot be removed until the springs are unwound. Besides riding the garage door, the CPSC also found that children enjoyed touching and with doors moving playing rollers and inside cables, sticking arms and fingers into the holes and large gaps in the track. To help prevent fingers from becoming tapped under the doors roller, Martin designed the Roller Shield, a plastic cover, which he combined with a rolled-edg- e track, greatly reducing the danger of hands and fingers being cut. "We have also taken out the big holes on the track and redesigned .the hinge so no one can get fingers in there," says Martin. Children also like to play on the outside lift cables, which are commonly installed on doors with low clearance. The cable, now located on the inside, behind the track, is out of reach from children, therefore reducing risk of injury. The new Martin Reverse Angle Shields not only provide safety for the consumer, but also allows the garage door to be installed in a more attractive manner and at less cost. The shields mount the track to the wall, closing off large gaps where arms, hands and fingers could once be trapped. "Most builders will add wood on the outside of the sheetrock before installing the door," says Martin. "Now wood doesnt have to be added with a Martin Door. By leaving it off, it is safer and money is saved on framing costs. The door ends up costing about the same as other doors." As of August 1998, Martin Doors has implemented nine c of torflf9 s?Cl driving you nuU? safety features on all residential and commercial models, except for 10 percent of its larger commercial doors, of which the lock-o- n spring is still side-mount- being developed. Other manufacturers offer only a couple of these safety features on one or two models, Martin stated. "We feel very comfortable that we now have eliminated most of the risks of the garage door for not only children, but for adults," explains Martin. also offers The company upgrades for its older models. Originally, we didnt want to obsolete any of the garage doors already sold. If somebody doesnt want to put out the money for a brand new door, we can upgrade it, however, upgrading all of these new items would cost about the same as a new door." is Besides safety, high-qualialso a priority at Martin Doors. Unlike many manufacturers, all Martin Doors are galvanized in order to prevent rusting. The galvanizing is a 2000 bonding process. The galvanizing, ions sacrifice themselves to protect a damaged part. Not all kinds of galvanizing protects steel. "We have the technology to create a longer life," says Martin. "Its a little bit more expensive, but we feel that if a home owner is going to purchase a garage door, they certainly shouldnt have put out money on springs after the new door is only five ty hot-dipp- years old." He states the Martin torsion spring, which is a 30.000-cycl- e spring, can expect to last for about 25 years before needing to be replaced. "Yes, consumers may have to pay a little extra for a Martin Door, but if kept for five years, just the springs alone make it the least expensive door that one can buy," Martin says. Established in 1936, Martin Door Manufacturing sells garage the western doors throughout United States and 42 countries.
