Show Page Two - The Pyramid - August 11, 1999 Last Thursday night, I was responsible for the increase of Sanpete Countys population by one person. No, there was no baby bom. (At least not that I had anything to do with.) What happened Thursday night was the arrival of Tanya. She old exchange is a student from Belarus. We met her at the airport in Salt Lake and brought her to Sanpete for the high school year. She had travelled from her hometown in Belarus to Minsk (the capital city); then by train to Moscow; then a jet flight to New York City and then on to Salt Lake City; then finally a drive down Highway 89 to Sanpete. I can hear some of you saying, "Where the heck is Belarus? I thought that was a kind of tractor." My ignorance and that of others around me has become a bit of a source of embarrassment as I have introduced Tanya to friends and neighbors. No one knows much about Belarus around here, including me, and many believe that all of the former Soviet Union is synonymous with "Russia". So, Im writing this selfishly to help solve some of my introduction problems as people meet Tanya. So listen up! When I introduce you to Tanya, this is how your response should go if you want to see her jaw drop because shell be so impressed with your knowledge: "Oh, so youre from Belarus? Lets see; that translates to "White Russia" doesnt it? You have your own language, even though Russian for many years has been required in schools and government. I remember that your country is one of the former Soviet republics and gained independence in 1991. Ill bet you get 17-ye- ar tired of people confusing your country with Russia all the time. Of course Belarus does border Russia on the east. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine are the other border countries, arent they? As 1 recall Belarus has a population of more than 10 million people and a land area about the size of the state of Kansas. Welcome to Sanpete and enjoy your stay!" (If someone really says that; theres a milkshake in it for them.) Sanpete continues to have a tradition of hosting international students to the area. Snow College has a renowned program for teaching english to speakers of other languages. This attracts students from all around the world. Japan has provided the most students in recent years. Ive noticed, however, that many other countries are being represented in larger numbers. Right now, the number of students coming form Togo, Hong Kong and Korea are significant. The college also trains teachers for teaching english to speakers of other languages. A two year certificate is offered in this teaching field. Its an occupation with growing needs with many opportunities available worldwide. Besides international student programs at the college, there are high school exchange programs which Sanpeters can become involved with. Its a real education to get acquainted with someone who has a different culture. If you havent tried it, you may want to consider it sometime. Sanpete deserves a big "thank-you- " for its hospitality to the world.... Merrill P.S. Its time for the Sanpete County Fair! Ill see you there. However, the most popular are still the purple, lavender, white and varieties. Larkspur are often confused with delphiniums, but they are actually annuals that are closely related to delphiniums. They reseed themselves most years, so they are often confused with perennial. Larkspur flowers are a bit smaller, but come in the same wonderful colors as delphiniums. They are normally sold as mixes, which means large splattering of many colors. They are showy and (energy) for future blooms. New small shoots should begin to grow near the base of the plant soon after the blossom has been trimmed. These form smaller flower spikes later in the summer or early fall. There are a number of different hybrids worth mentioning and to consider for a perennial border. Reduce frequency of watering and allow soil to dry between watering. Raspberry cane borer is a insect that bores through the middle of canes near the top. Since insects bore inside the cane, the only way to see them is by splitting cane open. Their boring disrupts the water flow to the top of the cane, which causes the top of the cane to wilt and leaves to turn brown. Of course, when plants look dry, the first thought is to water more. Unfortunately, this prowhich motes iron chlorosis, weakens plants, making them more susceptible to the cane borer. To check for cane borers, simply squeeze the top of the cane with a finger. Wear a glove to protect fingers from the thorns. When the cane borer is present, the cane smashes quite easily. The only treatment for the cane borer is to remove the top portion of the cane where the borer has been munching. Throw the cane away. Do not compost it or use it for mulch in the yard. Another problem this year has been leaf spot and other diseases in oak, aspen and maple trees. These diseases are common with cool, wet springs. Right now there is not much that can be done, but normally the tree wont die from this condition, but they will be weakened which leaves them more susceptible for other pests. The best thing to do is clean up all the leaves in the fall and remove them from the yard. Sanpete Couniy Fair. They are 10x10 and rent for $75. Whenever Mother Nature gets the months confused, plants have problems, according to a Utah State University extension press relase. "Freezing temperatures in late April and early May started problems with a disappointingly early exit of many of apples, peaches and apricots." says Jetry Goodspeed, Utah State University Extension horticulturalist. Wet weather also added to the problem of coryneum blight in stone fruits. This means most stone fruit tough enough to make it through the freezing temperatures are now spotted with little brown freckles. Coryneum blight cosmetically affects the fruit, but it is still edible and can be preserved. Nothing can be done about it right now, but if the disease goes unchecked in the coming years, it can infect the twigs and severely damage the tree. This fall, pick up and remove all the leaves after they fall, then spray the tree with Daconil to control the parts of the disease. This has also been a great year for black cherry aphids. Aphids roll the leaves of the tree, leaving a sticky, messy goo behind. Many natural predators help hard to achieve because they are snuggled comfortably inside the rolled leaves. A registered insecticide can also be used, but it may also kill the natural predators. are also Some raspberries HEIMfiPltto 'ill LEARN TO DRIVE A BIG RIG!!! 0 Warm March may cause tree damage over-winteri- Commercial Booths Available It (In Advance) $20 per State University extension service press release. are normally Delphiniums associated with large, English-styl- e gardens, where they are nestled amongst roses, lavender, blue salvia and other colorful flowers. Delphiniums bloom on tall spikes, so they are commonly used in borders or as background plants in the landscape. Good-spee- d explains. They bloom in early summer and often again in late summer or early fall. The tall spikes of these flowers need some type of support while blooming so they dont fall. A thin bamboo stake, or other support works best. Tie the flowers up just before they start to bloom. Delphiniums prefer a deep, soil but, with some organic-ric- h be can care, grown in about any them in the planting type. By early spring, they usually bloom the first year. Because they are so quick to bloom, many people treat them as annuals, buying new plants every year. They are actually a shortlived perennial and prefer short, cool summers to long, hot periods. After planting, fertilize delphiniums with an fertilizer. They are somewhat heavy feeders, so they may need to be fertilized every month while they are growing and water them deeply and infrequently, as with most perennials. Once the first tall flower spike is through blooming, remove it right below the lowest flower. Leave the foliage to give the plant area to produce more sugar Quantities limited Activation required.
