As I looked at the calendar, it occurred to me' that there are no holidays this month. That struck me as quite odd. I know that there are some months which have no legal holidays. But those months, 'March, for example, have at least a day like St. Patricks Day to spice things up a little. My calendar doesnt show a single event to commemorate August. It does show that well have a full moon on the Aug. 26; but thats as good as it gets. Dont get me wrong, full moons are mce. Seeing a huge moon rise over Sanpetes east mountains is spectacular. (Im reminded of a riddle. Whats gray, sits on a cliff, howls at the moon and is full of cement? - Keep reading for the answer.) I looked in my day planner to see if my wall calendar was just being chintzy on the August holidays. "Voila!", I said to myself when I saw something. Then I noticed that what I was seeing was a Canadian thing called "Civic Holiday" on August 2nd. Even if I felt like celebrating that (whatever it is) its already past. So here we are with a month smack dab m the middle of the warm season when school is out and we dont have a cotton-pickin holiday. We need a legitimate day off in August when routine commerce can pause and we can enjoy life. It needs to be on a Friday. (Youll recall that I whine chronically about Monday being chosen as the holiday day. With Monday as the holiday, Sunday gets scrunched between the days off and churches suffer). Sure, a day can be taken off without it being a holiday. But the problem is everyone else is working and they expect you to have your "nose to the grindstone" as well. When they want, you for something and find out that Cuz 'N Jewels Housecleaning Senior Discounts Summer Specials Fast & Dependable Service 427-327- 7 Julie a Sanpata's Lauding Nawtpapif THE PyRHIDID Published Weekly at Mt. Evidently a couple of fires have been started by people throwing cigarettes or matches or fireworks out front cars. Fast acting folks have put them out before they became serious. So consider yourselves reminded and well all be extra careful with fire so as to prevent any manmade catastrophes. Thanks. 1. 49 West Main Street Telephone: Asst. CO Building Systems Sanpete Steel I recently was looking through the June 2 issue of The Pyramid and couldnt believe what I was reading. It was in reference to a lady from Ephraim stating that if Wal-Ma- rt comes to town, the rate of crime would increase. Really now, where is she coming from? It is time she and other people in Sanpete who are opposed to Wal-Mar- t, get their head out of the sand and realize that progress is needed. Wal-Ma- rt will hire the majority of their employees from local people, so if she says Wal-Ma- rt will increase crime, then what she is saying is that the people she associates with every day are (LJ DSU J.Q. The intent of the county zoning ordinance is contrary to the inalienable rights of individuals, and usurps the original laws of our foundation of freedom. Chapter 3.1 states, "the county commission may regulate and restrict the erection, construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, or use of buildings and structures, and the use of land." What else is there? How does this protect our inalienable rights the government was established to protect? The whole zoning ordinance must be repealed. The Declaration of Independence preceded the Constitution and set the general principles which the founding fathers intended for the rule of the country. They established, as fact, that God has given man inalienable rights. To assure these rights, they established a constitution limiting government. Alexander Hamilton argued against the Bill of Rights on the point that rights were so varied and diverse that to define them is to limit them. The Bill of Rights was passed on the argument, "that it is the nature of government to, grow and take power to itself. That power must be specifically kept from infringing in certain important areas. The legal foundation of the Declaration of Independence is In 1993 the intensity rose by 158 percent and continued about still spells controversy Wal-Ma- rt The Celsius temperature scale was named for Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer who first described a "centigrade" thermometer in 1742. Dear Editor: Mens 365-50- 0) (USPS FBI records show that military-typ- e rifles are seldom abused by criminals to kill law enforcement officers and frequency of such abuses have dropped in recent years to the point of extreme rarity, despite a marked rise in the number of such rifles in the hands of citizens. Of those murders, 387 or 1.8 percent involved abuse of a rifle. Of those involving a rifle 261 were .22 caliber rimfire and no more than nine could have been military type rifles. Other states reports show similar findings. Provo er " I want to discuss my thoughts. Does Moroni City have a planning committee? If pot, they need one. I recently noticed how nice some of the roads in town were paved and smooth, no potholes.' Now, I see that most streets in town have been dug up for new water lines, which is leaving a mess all over. The roads are now far from smooth with trenches being dug and leaving holes. I have also noticed what a mess has been made to some peoples yards. Dont the people doing the work know they should leave a persons property in the same condition they found it in or better? Instead I see broken sprinklers and lawns tom up, left in a mess. It seems to me the city should plan ahead and do this type of construction before spending all the money in paving the roads. Also, they should make the people doing the digging, clean up the mess and leave property as they found it. J.Q. It suddenly occurs to me that Sanpete does have a quasiholiday in August. Its the Friday of the last week of the county fair. The courthouse closes at noon and everything. I think we better jump on this and expand the concept. . There are just two small hurdles to get over to make this what it should be. First of all, it needs to be an all day Friday holiday. Second, we need to get the rest of the country to sanction it. The key element for success will be naming the holiday. "The Sanpete County Fair sounds National Holiday" it wouldnt but probably good, get out of committee in Congress. Besides Sanpete shouldnt be linked to two national holidays. (Im personally carrying the load to have Thanksgiving made into a two day holiday with the second day being Turkey "Sanpete Left-OvDay"). I would suggest that the new August holiday be named something along the lines of: "Its Hot as Blazes and I Dont Want to Go to Work Day." I think America might be ready for it. What do you think? Merrill (Riddle Answer: A coyote. Abused firearms are then divided into bullet caliber. No other agency, state or federal, does this. Poor planning Dear Editor: As a former Sanpete resident, There was a 33 percent drop in the number of law enforcement officers killed in action in 1983-9- 2 and most of the officers were killed with their own handguns. In 1993, statistics issued by the FBI contradicted public perception that violent crime across the country is rapidly rising. In fact the numbers show Americas crime rate for violent and nonviolent offenses alike, have actually fallen a little in the last two , years. The homicide rate has remained roughly the same, about 10 each year per 100,000 people. Yet, data published by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms shows that the number of handguns has doubled, from 35 million in 1974, to 72 million in ' 1992. From this information we can conclude that there is no connection between the rise in the number of handguns and the incidence of murder. An article in Journal Graphics Inc., with the ' topic heading "Guns and Gun Control", cited that there was 10 times more written comment in 1990 than in 1980.
