I visited a friend, Mike, while there. Mike moved away from Sanpete eight or 10 years ago. He wanted to be filled in on any recent changes in Sanpete. My initial reaction was to report that "nothing changes in Sanpete". However, the more we talked, the more evident that it was that Sanpete has changed and that things continue to change. Our visit was enlightening to both of us. It showed how time marches on. There are births and deaths, marriages and divorces, and triumphs and failures, both personal and public. Sometimes we live out day to. day lives in Sanpete and think that nothing ever changes. We're too close to the trees to see the forest. (Or is it vice versa?) When my friend lived here the economy was "deadsville". It was a big novelty when someone built a new house in Sanpete. It was a seldom occurrence and a rare treat to view such a thing. People would drive from miles around to see an excavated basement. "Honey, I heard that a new house is going up in Ephraim. Load the kids in the car, and lets go get ice cream and check it out." Of course, Sanpetes economy is not yet on a par with Kuwaits, but there has been The Fountain Green Second LDS Ward Relief Society held their annual birthday party on March 11, in the elementary school. A doctor has discovered that an ingredient found in a small fruit grown in Asia, combined with an ingredient praised by the U.S. Department of Agriculture can help cause significant weight loss. In a study reported in a prestigious American medicai journal. Dr. Anthony A. Conte, M.D. reported that the formula, now called Bio-Re- x 3000, caused patients to lose more than twice as much weight as a control group on the same fat reduced diet. Neither group was instructed to decrease the amount of food they ate or to increase their exercise levels. An article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says that you don't have to reduce the amount of food you eat to lose weight, provided that you limit die fat. Scientists suggest that the mechanism behind the weight reduction may include decreasing sugar cravings and interruption of the "Krebs Cycle", an important step in the body's fat storage process. "The best part of this unique discovery is that it is not a drug, but a safe dietary food supplement" says Dr. Conte. The Asian fruit, called garcinia, is similar to citrus fruit found in the United States with one it may help some people big exception fight obesity! Some sectors of Sanpetes business world are subject to large cyclical ups and downs, notably the turkey business. A lessening of those market fluctuations would certainly help. Its easier said than done. I believe most Sanpeters are satisfied with a gradual rate of growth. Most dont want a boomtown situation. I have observed another change in Sanpete over the past 10 years. It may well be linked to the upswing in the economy. Im thinking about the change in attitude of many Sanpeters. It used to be that people here had a "poor me, poor Sanpete" attitude. Thats the way my friend remembers it. The attitude still exists, even with me, but not to the same degree. I think we are a happier, more determined to make our own way kind of people now. We have looked to ourselves and persevered. We realize that "the buck stops with us in most cases. Under existing water rights agreements, a maximum of 5.400 acre-fe(without evaporation) per year of project water would be released through the Narrows Tunnel. The reservoir would provide long-tercarryover storage for consecutive drought years. The dam, with a crest length of 425 feet and crest width of 30 feet, would be in the same location as that for the Proposed Action Alternative. The average annual water supply under this alternative would be reduced to 4,900 acre-febecause there would be less carry over storage. In years with average or above average precipitation, the full 5,400 acre-fowater right would be available. Requirements for implementation of water conservation measures by project water users would be the same as for the proposed action.
