Show Page Two - The Pyramid - December 4, 1996 Spirit of freedom comes from being Christian nation NTARY & Calvin Hobbes Fact Finding at Grand Canyon We broke tradition for Thanksgiving this year. We had the fresh Norbest turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Eve. Early Thanksgiving morning, we tossed our bags into the car and headed out to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. is Modern transportation A seven short hours amazing. later, (including gas and potty stops) we were looking into the impressive canyon at Desert View. Thats the point with the landmark watchtower designed by Mary Colter. the Masterfully stating obvious, 1 continue to say, "You can get to anywhere in the world from Sanpete County, Utah. The fact is there are many, many interesting and renowned destinations within a days drive from Sanpete. We had a great family vacation. I evaluate the success of the trip by the fact that my kids returned home alive and with no injuries which will leave permanent scars. However, I wish 1 had a dollar for each time I said "Stop it!", "Be Careful", and "Be Quiet!" That income alone would have paid for the vacation. The trip was not strictly pleasure. Ever at the ready to serve the Sanpete public, I had an investigation to perform. It was at the Grand Canyon that President Bill Clinton announced and signed into existence the new Utah national monument. It was my quest to check out the "tree rumor." I have been told by several people that a tree was cut down to enhance the view at the site where the president did "the monument thing." If the rumor were true, as some Sanpeters have held, the irony and paradoxicality would be phenomenal. A tree cut down for cosmetic purposes as a president plays to the environmentalist voting block? To make a long story short, the rumor could not be confirmed. In fact, it was emphatically denied. Ready with a camcorder dangling from my shoulder, I interviewed a white haired ranger on the steps of the El Tovar Hotel. He explained that what I had heard was a "malicious rumor" invented by the presidents detractors. Mr. Ranger explained the location of where the president gave his speech. The monu- - Sanpttt'i Leading Newspaper the pyRnmiD (USPS ment proclamation signing was a short distance away from the speech site. He said there was a natural deadfall of a small tree near the signing spot that may have been the source of the rumor. I investigated both sites. I saw the deadfall which had obviously been dead for a long time. I looked hard but couldnt see anything suspicious. This was a disappointment to He believed my that we were on the verge of a significant journalistic moment. He thought that we would be hired by 60 Minutes and congratulated by Mike Wallace. (Actually, I was slipping into daydreams of sending Andy Rooney a tape with the incriminating evidence.) To Clinton and his staffs credit, there was no sign of tree decimation. As part of our trip, we rode the train the 65 miles from the canyon to Williams, AZ. The Grand Canyon Railway was resurrected in 1989. It had been shut down in the 60s due to the "American love affair with the automobile." It was interesting to learn that the railroads were the entities which promoted and protected many areas which the government later deemed to be national parks, i.e.. The Northern Pacific and Yellowstone; The Southern Pacific and Yosemite and the Sequoias; and the Grand Canyon Railway and the Grand Canyon. The train started service to the canyon in 1901. The monument designation came from Teddy Roosevelt in 1908. The railroad campaigned for national park status which came in 1919. The train experience harrowed up memories of the loss of our Sanpete rail: I believe our county has yet to fully absorb the significance of the loss of the railroad. The rail could have been saved for a fraction of the cost of the Great Salt Lake pumps which were purchased at the same time of the Billys Mountain-Denve- r Rio Grande disaster. The pumps now sit rusting, having never been a real factor in flood control. Meanwhile, Sanpete sits with no railroad y much of and a which has been sold out piecemeal to dozens of property owners beyond seemingly reclamation. . . .Merrill P.S. and F.Y.I.: I am acquainted with all three Sanpete County commissioners. I believe them to be men of high integrity. Furthermore I believe that they all possess senses of humor and realize as public figures they are fair game for "kidding around." right-of-wa- 365-58- 0) Published Weekly at Mt.
