A happy child by nature, she loved to pick flowers and fashion bouquets for neighbors or her mother. One day while she was plucking a colorful arrangement, a passerby spotted her in the act. Later this lady asked Lucile s mother why she allowed her to ruin the bed of flowers. Her mothers reply, "Its hers to enjoy; Im raising girls, not flowers. " Lucile recalls that as a Mutual Improvement Association member, her teacher taught the girls this poem: Patience is a virtue, keep it if you can. Its always found in women, and seldom found in men. Patience was one of the virtues that allowed Lucile to keep her family in clothes during the depression years. She recalls sewing underwear out of cotton flour sacks. Always a seamstress, she sewed bandages from old sheets to bind the wounded in World War I, and later in World War II. She also sewed canvas packs for parachutes for Utah Parachute Company of Manti. Three of her sons served during World War II. Robert was a radio operator in the Southwest Pacific; Conrad a member of the Signal Corps in Europe and Dan a belly gunner on a B-flying out of Great Britain. Immediate members of Lucile s family are husband Clark, who died in 1971; a daughter Anne Jensen, who died in 1992; Robert and Conrad, who live in Manti; and Dan, who lives in Price.
