Ike told me Roy was real impressed. Burt told Hy he remembered the whole thing, but he didnt believe Hy knew what he was talkin about when he said her name was "Wallis", and that got Hy goin in a hurry. (One thing we know at the shop is that Hy has a whole heap of newspaper clippins, and he reads them things over and over all the time. So when Burt brought that up about that womans name, you might as well called Hy a Democrat! I never remember Burt cornin out of the seat so fast in all the years hes been cornin in.) Next thing we all knew, Burt was bettin Hy on who was right and who was wrong, and it got awful loud in the shop for a spell. So we all witnessed the bet and Hy tore outta there like a man possessed to retrieve the clippin to back him up. Not five minutes later he came back and Burt took a long look at that and muttered somethin under his breath and Hy just nearly burst due to swellin up with satisfaction. Burt never said a word for quite awhile. Then he pulled out his pocketknife and started cleanin his fingernails. Pretty soon he spoke up and said he still thought it was a damn poor name for a woman to have to be saddled with. That was as close as Hy was goin to get to an outright acknowledgement by Burt on who was right. Hy just sorta glowed the whole rest of the time he was in the shop. Ezra just got back from his annual check-u- p at the clinic in Provo just the other day. He said all the talk waitin room was on how had BYU had done in the basketball season this year. He said one fellar said that things aint gonna change as long as they stick with the coach theyve got. Ez said one man spoke up and had the nerve to suggest that if that fat coach from Utah had been the coach at Provo over the last few years, BYU woulda probably had another bumper sticker mentioning them as "National Champions". Well, you coulda heard a pin drop in that office when that fellar stopped talkin. People were lookin at each other like Satan himself had just come in. Then this fellar jumped in and told that Utah guy that itd be a cold day when BYU would stoop to havin a Gentile like that "U" coach at their school. Now, most people woulda just let it go at that point, but not that Utah guy. I could see hed hit a nerve and was gonna drill for all it was worth. He looked at all of them old duffers sittin there in their blue Cougar cardigans, and he told them he wasnt surprised. He said BYU had sorta slipped from their winning ways in the last few years, and with the new regulation on faculty pass ports, (he said passports, but we knew what he meant) there probably wouldnt be a winning basketball team in Provo until the missionaries in Indiana could convert Bobby Knight and sell him on the idea of mpvin west! Now Ive been in some waitin rooms that were boring, but I gotta say this right now. That wasnt a boring place to be! You coulda chilled jello in that room, and it stayed that way right up to when the nurse called for the gentleman who was in for a proctology exam to follow her.
