Show Page Two - The Pyramid - November 23, 1994 Merrill Ogden & Calvin Hobbes (Commemtai&y Here1 we are on the eve of the Sanpete, holiday. Thanksgiving is the holiday that we are reminded of just about every day of our lives here in the heart of Utah. Driving up and down the highways and byways of Sanpete we see the symbol of Thanksgiving as a routine part of the landscape. Its a fact! The five senses of Sanpeters are affected constantly by turkeys. They are everywhere around here. The poultry places house zillions of the birds. (Hows that for a and precise statistic?) We see license plates on trucks around here that pick-u- p read "turkey man". Feed trucks have painted images of sexy ladies and, of course, turkeys. We make no apologies. This is turkey territory. Turkey is king. Turkey is also queen. (This is a politically correct piece, and hens will get equal treatment.) We have been seeing the trailers the past few weeks transporting the birds. Its the fateful ride to that Moroni destination from whence there is no return. Those wings have got to stop flapping sometime. Feathers accumulate along the side of the road like so much snow. It reminds us of the story of the gossip whose punishment was to scatter feathers to the wind and then gather them up again. The lesson learned is that vicious words are difficult to retrieve once spoken. I dont think I know anyone who doesnt like eating turkey. It is one of those universally accepted foods. I personally get excited about a smoked boneless turkey roast. Sitting down to that makes me forget all about turkey dust and upper respiratory bronchial spasms. And then there is the super barbecued famous Sanpete which some for people turkey front outside the area annually brave the Manti ; Pageant, crowds but dont even see the pageant. They come to Sanpete to get that phenomenal barbe- South Pacific 9 was class act MT. PLEASAN- T- North Sanpete High Schools production of "South Pacific" was another feather in the cap of returning director Suzan Rasmussen as she deftly handled her cast of 80 as though they were barely a handful. Rasmussen put a together mens chorus made up of school athletes, studentbody and academic leaders, seminary and FFA members, and not only did their singing sound nearly professional, she got them to dance (includbarrell rolling) as ing on-sta- well! Rasmussen, helped by choreographers Melanie Eldridge and Kate Carney, taught boys and girls to do some difficult, but jitterbugging, and her "boogie-wooginumber was well-execut- ed e" right out of the 40s (hairstyles included) and Barrett Hilton, playing Emile DeBec, made the transition from Don Quixote to the dashing Frenchman with relative ease, and maintained an almost flawless French accent throughout the entire play, even while singing (not an easy task at the high school level). Nellie Forbush (Lucien Christensen) was as bubbly and perky as Mitzi Gay nor ever thought of being and from "dumb blonde" to her real tears at plays end Thursday night she was sincere and believeable (not to mention her smooth costume changes). Crowd favorite, Ben Eicher, as Lt. Billis, wowed us in scene after scene with his on-sta- ge high-come- antics. Between the ship "tattoed" on his chest to the coconut bra and grass skirt to the constant conning and authority-duckinthe audience.from grandparents to toddlers, were kept laughing. Another crowd pleaser was Bonnie Bench, playing Bloody Mary, whose Polynesian expletives drew laughs on every repetition. The soft lights and "frozen" actors added to her throaty rendition of "Bali Hai." From the creative scenery (excepting the bare stage that swallowed up the actors voices) to the shouts and rhythms of the Polynesian dancers accompanied authentically by Theron Ioane, this was a class act. From Rasmussen and this crew, one can expect nothing less... g, by Merrill Ogden The Manti High School students who performed the musical, "Hello Dolly", this past week should feel the satisfaction of success. The show was entertaining for the audience and, importantly, the cast was having a good time as well. It seems that theater at the school is on the upswing. Judging from the sheer number of students participating, interest is increasing among the student body. The principal parts of the show were double cast with a senior and junior cast, providing some good experience which will be valuable for future shows. I saw the junior cast Saturday night. The story of Dolly Levi, a matchmaker, who has to do her own brand of work for herself, was a smash on Broadway in the 60s. Dolly sets her sights on Horace Vandergelder, a feed and hay store proprietor. One of the best lines is when Dolly helps Horace while theyre dining on turkey. "Let me cut your wings," she says symbolically. As in all musicals of this type, the obstacles are overcome, and love and happiness prevail.
