Show Page Six - The Pyramid - July 6, 1994 Dr. Kim Bateman, SVH to host University of Utah medical student EPHRAI- Dr. Kim Bateman and family, and Sanpete Valley Hospital will host Univermedical sity of Utah fourth-yestudent Bradley M. Burton durirg a preceptorship he will be serving as part of his studies. According to a recent news release, the Family Practice Division at the University of Utah School of Medicine sponsors a family practice clerkshippreceptorship in which students select communities and family physicians where and with whom they can experience and observe medical care in the community setting. This program is part of an effort by the medical school to familiarize students with the way medicine is practiced outside of the University Medical Center and to encourage more students to consider preparing themselves for community practice as family physicians, especially in rural areas which are experiencing a shortage of physicians. In a telephone interview, Dr. Bateman, explained that a preceptorship differs from a clerkship in that with the preceptorship the student is out of the hospital setting and is working with a physician in a primary care office. He also explained that the students are required to spend a M- ar one-mon- th month in ' a clerk-in each field shippreceptorship of medicine. Burton graduated from Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City, and received his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Utah. Family practice is his area of special interest and he hopes to practice medicine in a rural setting. His goal during this preceptorship is to gain a better understanding of rural family practice and gain clinical experience. Burtons'extracurricular interests include basketball, golf, tennis, pencil art, and research in dermatology and neonatology. He, his wife and daughter will be staying with the Batemans during this rotation due to unavailability of lodging because of the Mormon Miracle Pageant. Dr. Bateman said he has been hosting students like Brad for the past 18 years and most of them have stayed with his family. He feels this will give the Burtons an idea of what their home life will be like when Brad becomes a practicing physician. When staying with the hosting physician instead of in a motel, the student shadows the doctor; so... whenever the phone rings, day or night, Brad will be accompanying Dr. Bateman out the door.
