Show Page Four - The Pyramid - May 11, 1994 Moroni plans spring clean up Garn is Tanner Lecture guest by Dean CP Driscoll EPHRAI- M- Former Senator of Franklin Jake Garn will be the guest speaker at the annual Tanner Lecture held at Snow College each year. Gam will be speaking at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 12 in the recital hall at the Snow College Music Building. The lecture is part of Humanities Week at the college, which will also include a presentation by Utah artist Connie Borup, whose visit is sponsored by the Utah Humanities Council. She will be speaking on Tuesday, May 10 at 9:30 a.m., also in the music building. The Tanner Lecture series is made possible by the Grace Tanner Foundation and is open to the public. Garn is continuing a tradition of quality speakers who have attended the Tanner Lecture in the past. Former guests include McGovern, Governor George Scott Matheson, former Secretary of Education Terrell Bell and author Alisha Appleman-JurmaGarn retired from the U.S. Senate last year after 18 years of service to return to Utah. He was born in Richfield and attended Utah public schools. He graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor of science degree in banking and finance. In November of 1984, Garn was invited by NASA to fly as a payload specialist on the space shuttle Discovery on flight 51-During the seven-da- y flight, he performed various medical tests. The flight landed at Cape Canaveral on April 19, 1985 after orbiting the earth 109 times. He served in the U. S. Navy as a pilot. He is a retired Brigadier General in the Utah Air National Guard and has logged more than 10,000 hours of pilot Broadcast Quest, Intermountain International, Health Care and the Salt Lake City Airport Authority. Connie Borup is a Utah artist who has the distinction of being the first artist to display her work in the Snow College Humanities Building Art Gallery. She was by Barbara Gordon MORONI The annual spring clean up is planned for the week ending May 14, with the three Moroni LDS wards taking charge of the effort along city streets, neighborhoods and parks. Glad Bags .were distributed to each ward under the direction of the State Centennial Commission, g who has suggested a for their use. During this process, an assigned group will meet the Utah National Guard truck at city hall and lift the bags from the street frontages. The Guard will begin trash collection at noon on Saturday. Relief Society suggestions, solicited by the LDS Stake Presi also invited to help celebrate the grand opening of the new building. Borup is currently teaching at Rowland Hall-S- t. Marks High School in Salt Lake City. She specializes in oil painting and will be talking about American landscape Painting. by C. R. Truitt SPRING CIT- Y- Mayor Robert Allred commended residents for their clean-u- p efforts last year during the May 5 city council meeting, and said he looks forward to dealing with the few remaining eyesores this year. He said the National Guard will be on hand again to help clean up around city hall and along the sides of the streets. Neither the Guard nor city trucks, however, are allowed to go onto private property because of insurance concerns. Much of the meeting centered on pulling together the 1994-9- 5 fiscal year budget, and all departments will be required to have their budget requests to Councilman John Thomas by May 10 for inclusion in a special g on May 19 in order to have the budget ready for the June 2 public hearing. Assisting in the arrests were Mt. Pleasant Police Department and the Utah Highway Patrol. A call, May 2, from a citizen alerted authorities of a reckless driver. Mt. Pleasant Police Department located the vehicle in question and a pursuit ensued. The North Sanpete Drug Task Force was called in for assistance when drugs and alcohol were located in the vehicle. A letter had been received from her attorney requesting the council to meet with them but, before doing so, the city will seek legal counsel on the question of whether the kennel comes under new ordinance restrictions or is exempt. The Mayor pointed out, though, that the city hasnt stopped her from doing business at this point. Repair of the sidewalk in front of the school was discussed.
