Show ) Page Four - The Pyramid - June 9, 1993 Miss Sanpete completes community service project MORONI Miss Sanpete County, Carolyn Finlinson, recently completed her community service project, which consisted of verifying information on all Sanpete County residents for the new 911 system. Under the direction of County Commissioner Eddie Cox and Miss Sheriff Berry Bradley, Finlinson made corrections on addresses, names, telephone numbers, ESN numbers and special problems regarding all residents for computer entry. In addition to making reminders and handouts, she also prepared a presentation on the function, use and importance of the emergency system, visiting all eight elementary schools in the county. "I was excited to take an active part in helping with the emergency system and feel it was very rewarding to inform elementary students about it," she says. Miss Finlinson is the daughter of Karl and Joyce Finlinson of Moroni. She will represent the county at the upcoming Miss Utah Scholarship Pageant June where she will describe her service project. After the pageant, she will begin her next project with the County Fairboard, a phone survey of Sanpete County residents. 15-1- 9, Moroni memorial , dedicated at cemetery by Barbara Gordon MORONI American Legion Post 107 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9276 dedicated the Memorial Gardens, located at the Moroni City Cemetery, May 31. Councilwoman Ramona Harris welcomed a large crowd from Moroni and surrounding cities and read a Memorial Inscription Message. Moroni Mayor Larry Freeman read a proclamation bestowing the memorials name. After a military ritual dedication under the combined command of ALP Commander Rex Jensen and VFW Commander Earl J. Ursenbach, the audience rose while the flag was raised followed by an impressive 21 gun salute. VFW Senior Vice Commander Paul Larsen dedicated the -- gardens. He thanked all those who helped, including a Fountain Green woman who had donated $100 she could not afford knowing it was "for a very worthy cause." Others who donated labor and support included the American Legion, VFW, Moroni City, DUP, Senior Citizens, Moronis 4th of July and Beautification committees, Monk Monument Service, Cox Rocks, and Moroni Feed Company. Present at the dedication were Moronis newly elected royalty, Queen Melissa Bailey and attendants Heather Kellett and Jessica Wilkey. American Legion Chaplain Bruce Irons gave the invocation and VFW Chaplain Frank Riley the dedicatory prayer. Manti couple honored with degrees successful future with the Utah Opera Company. She was a beekeeper before and after her marriage. A musician, she both sang and led many choral groups. She used her extraordinary teaching abilities to shape the lives of young people in a number of voluntary church positions, including ward Relief Society and Primary president. MMore than 60 Wilbur and Leonora years after Cox attended Snow College, the couple received honorary degrees. President Gerald Day presented each with a Doctorate of Humane Letters degree during the colleges 105th annual Commencement exercises held last Saturday. Leonora was Manti Temple Matron from 1978 to 1985. Fairview correspondent Flag Day to be observed FOUNTAIN GREE- N- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9276 will hold a Flag Day Ceremony Monday, June 14, at the home of Terry and Lucille Jensen, 48 East 400 South, at 2 p.m. On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day, to be celebrated throughout the nation. The ceremony will dedicate a new flagpole at the Jensen residence. VFW members, citizens and anyone interested are welcome to attend the ceremony. FAIRVIE- W- A former California man, Les Neves, is the new Fairview correspondent for The Pyramid. Neves graduated with a BS degree in accounting from BYU in 1949 and for several years was the accountant for Ricks College in Rexburg, ID. He worked for 26 years as an appeals officer for the Internal Revenue Service in Salt Lake City, Billings, MT, and Los Angeles, CA, during which he attended Western States University College of Law and retired from the Civil Service in 1981. He has worked as a correspondent for The American Fork Citizen, covered seven cities in northern Utah County for The Deseret News, and worked as staff writer for the Ozark Graphic and the Prospect News, both in Doniphan, MO. Neves served during World War II as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division and saw action on Leyte and Luzon, in the Philippines. The 11th Airborne was the first to begin the occupation of Japan after the surrender "Its been like living in a popcorn popper," Neves said, noting they really relish the peace and quiet here in Sanpete County, and love the people here. Les enjoys hunting and fishing and genealogical research. After their family was grown, he and his wife worked as ordinance workers in the St. George LDS Temple, then served a Family History Mission for the LDS Church in Salt Lake City for 18 months, where they were editors and publishers of biographical books for the mission. n ' Calvin M. and Rita S. Allred have been called to serve in the Connecticut Hartford LDS Mission. They will speak Sunday, June 13, at 11 a.m. in the Fountain Green Second LDS Ward Chapel, 151 South second West. They will enter the MTC in Provo July 5. They were recently released as ordinance workers in the Manti LDS Temple, having served there for five years. Calvin is a former Fountain Green bishop. The couple has five' children and 16 grandchildren. Missionary farewell services for Mark Parnell, son of Gary and Katie Parnell, will be held June 13, 1993, in the Spring City LDS First Ward at 10:50 a.m. Mark has been called to the Argentina, Buenos Aires West Mission. They were married in 1966 when she had seven children under 12 and he had one just out of high school. They had one more and adopted three, for a total of twelve. Although their family consists of "hers, mine, ours and theirs," as Les said, "theyre all really just ours." They have 32 grandchildren. They have also been licensed as a therapeutic foster home for LDS Social Services, Social Services in Missouri and Iowa, and have sponsored half a hundred Laotian refugees who call them "Mom and "Dad." degree in engineering in 1932 and went on to complete an electrical engineering degree at the University of Colorado. Starting his career with Western Electric, he later joined Utah Power and Light and an insurance engineering firm in Salt Lake City. In 1942 he took special training in the new and very secret technology of radar in the Navy. Following the war, he was employed by a consulting engineering firm in New York City involving electric and gas utilities with clients in most parts of the United States. He was a worldwide insurance manager and chief safety engineer for Sylvania Electric Products before transferring to Arrow Mutual Liability in Boston, rising to the position of president before his retirement 8 years later. While in Boston he served as first president of the Boston LDS Stake. Later the couple oversaw the Oakland, CA, LDS Mission before returning to Sanpete County where Wilbur was South Sanpete Stake President for almost, seven years. He has also been temple president and stake patriarch. About their days at Snow College, the couple says, "...It was there that we found each other. Both of us consider the days at Snow some of the happiest of our lives." Wilbur W. and Leonora B. Cox have been married for 55 years and are Sanpete County natives, Leonora from Fairview and Wilbur from Manti. They began dating while students at Snow in 1931 and were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple in 1937. They have three daughters and 20 grandchildren. 1 in 1945. Les said he and his wife, Gay, ?D cently.
