Show Mrs. Anne Porter Nelson Celebrates 91st Birthday Mrs. Anne Porter Nelson, the last surviving member of the group of pioneers who settled Mt. Pleasant in March, 1859, observed ob-served her 91st birthday Saturday Satur-day at her home. Mrs. Nelson was born in Pro-vo, Pro-vo, January 18, 1856, a daughter of James Buchanan and Mary Anne Leslie Porter. The family-came family-came to Sanpete county with the first settlers and founded Mt. Pleasant, then called Fort Hambleton, in March, 1859. Mrs. Nelson has resided here continuously since. As a young woman she became adept in pioneer arts spinning, weaving, weav-ing, carding wool, quilting and sewing. She has been an ex pert in fine needlework and chocheting. She has been an active worker in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many years as a Relief Re-lief society teacher in the North ward. She is a charter member of the Mt. Pleasant Pioneer Historical Assn. In 1875, she was married to A. G. Nelson, farmer, wool grower and cattleman of this city, and they were the parents of 11 children. Mr. Nelson died in November, 1918. Her sons and daughters are Mrs. O. L. Winters, Cannon. Obed and Edgar Nelson of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. William Watson and George Nelson of San Francisco; Fran-cisco; Hugh Nelson of Spring City and Miss Helen Nelson o' Denver. |
