Saturday morning, for instance, we caught the full force of an outsider's amazement at the condition of the town's Main street sidewalks. No Conner had he been introduced than he was expressing in some pretty strong language his opinion of the walk (or lack thereof) which he had observed while stumbling that morning from the railioad station to the center of town. He had come here to spend the holiday weekend with friends and it was obvious that his visit was off to a bad start. It sounded really bad, but somehow we didn't feel sorry for the outsider. We were too busy feeling sorry for ourselves. Why? Because that very morning we had come over the same sidewalk and hadn't noticed a thing wrong with it! Brother, when that happens to you, you're slipping. You're beginning to accept the inevitable and it's time to read again an abbrasive little epigram written not so long ago by the De Sales, the French journalist. It's the one that goes like this: "They tell me I ought to accept reality. Why not tell me to accept disorder? My cat accepts reality with complete acquiescence; he adjusts himself to it as soft rubber tires adjust themselves to ruts in the road. That is his role. Must it be mine7 However reasonable, prudent, practical one may be, there is always a stubborn something in us which refuses such acquiescence. For us living is a refusal to accept such reality'', to fight against it, to create an order which is superior to it. What I mean by reality is the inevitable. And now to get back to the sidewalks of Main street. It turns out that neither the outsider, nor we had any cause to get our shirts off about them. It seems a group of homeowners on Main street decided some time ago no.t to accept the inevitability of worn-ou- t sidewalks, and acHarold Hansen, city recorder, have ready right cording to now a petition to the city council requesting that a paving district be set up along the Main street area. to , PLEASANT and 200 ft Winkelman, Stake And Whimpy Speak Sunday Lepiescntatlvcs of the , is. tut Mt , The graduates attending wen--Rese arid Helen Madsen Bun nell of Biigham City; Ray (' and Pearl loulsen Peterson, Mt Pleasant; Mrs Chiisty Jacobsen Reynolds, Salt Lake; Kav Mills Ogden; Don Stiate, California; Farrell Madsen, Provo; Miles Suienson and Royal Sorenson Mt Pleasant; V a n Noy St, wart Milbutn; Mrs. Lucille Stewart Reteison, Irovo: Oolden Carlston, Fairview; Mrs. Verda AnFairview: derson, Amundsen, Mis lia Larsen Haase, Provo; Mis. Herbert Hoover was quoted this week as saying the government ought to take a 10 per cent cut in its own payroll. This, he said, would result in 200,000 fewer people on the federal payroll than there are at present. The reduction, said Hoover, could be accomplished in a short time if replacements were not hired for government employes who quit.
