Show Rodeo arena is unique asset Page Two - The Pyramid - April 21, 1999 Kimm Merrill Ogden Rockwell would have liked Sanpete My wife and I have been married for 20 years today. (Thanks for the memories Diane!) For an anniversary trip, we drove to southern California last Thursday night. We took Friday off from work for a long weekend. We had a great time and saw some new country. I had taken the latest Saturday Evening Post along for reading material. In it was an article about a temporary exhibition of Norman Rockwell paintings. The art is on loan from several places and is gathered at the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum in Simi Valley. Being fans of Rockwell (like many of you and millions of others who have had the Post in their homes or seen Rockwells work otherwise) we wanted to see the show. We made the effort to see it by delaying our departure by a few hours from California on Sunday. ly The exhibit of original and sketches on paintings display was called, "Norman Rockwell Paints the Presidents and the America They Governed." Some of the political figures on display are LBJ, JFK, Nixon, Goldwater, Ike, and, of course, Ronald Reagan. Other notable paintings there were a couple from the National Scouting Museum: "A Scout is Loyal" (a boy scout with the shadow and George Washington and an Eagle in the background) and "To Keep Myself Physically Strong." (A Cub Scout measuring a Boy Scouts chest for hopeful increased size.) The "Four Freedoms" series YSpeech, Wor Water for Sale for Well Permits whether we like it or not. I will feel as bad as anyone else if some of the stores are hurt by WalMart, but what about those who have been hurt by not having items, such as shoes, children clothes larger than a size five, adult clothes larger than a size 18 in ladies and large in mens, that we dont have to pay $30 plus for. This is especially hard on young families with low wages and the elderly who are on a fixed income, to travel north where they can get just the items they need for their families. WalMart, Shopko, etc., have many items so much cheaper and of same quality as we are able to get locally. We can usually pay for our way north by what we save. Our stores provide a great service to us. They also have great sales, which we take advantage of. We also buy items of necessity locally, but if we want something that can wait, we wait and go up North. If the truth was known, Im sure many stores sell items marked "Made in the USA", the same as WalMart. that is made in the United States, sides, store owners are seen North" buying things. So please, lets give it a rest. Lets get on the bandwagon for something we really need. Working at the sheriffs office, I hear and receive many complaints on drugs, such as why do drug users who get arrested, get nothing except maybe a small fine and are back at it the next day. The reason is because there is no mandatory-minimusentencing for drug offenses until the arrests are a felony, and then sometimes there is no jail time, just fines. Our legislation has voted down bills that would give those arrested for drug offenses minimum sentences. Lets not waiste our time over something that is coming no matter how we feel. Lets spend it on something to benefit the safety of our families. Write to our representatives encouraging the passing of bills on mandatory-minimusentencing for drug offenses. rt, 798-005- . 2 Nice, neat, public parking could be developed. An area could be set aside where a contestant could warm up a good horse before a rodeo event, maybe 10 to 20 RV parking stalls could be set aside on the west end, that could accommodate visitors all year long, as well as contestants for events that can be held. We need to look no further than Nephi to the west, Spanish Fork to the north, and Salina to the south, to recognize the great potential of a well managed fair grounds. The livestock industry has the potential to provide our youth with numerous opportunities to learn respect, responsibility, and service. A good facility can introduce our youth to career opportunities and even provide training for an individual wanting to pursue a career in the industry. The improvements that have been mentioned are not expensive propositions. Quite the contrary, in fact, many of the improvements could be accomplished with volunteer help and city equipment. The existing chutes, corrals, and bleachers are of History does repeat itself Dear Editor: I m Needed to run natural herb farm. Call SOS Staffing 4-- H have been following the issues connected with the rodeo grounds with great interest. I am disabled and unable to attend the meetings with you, so I am with you in spirit. Five long years ago, I and other residents of Mt. Pleasant attended many city council meetings concerning the impending development of Aspen Village. Those residents had prepared and statements presentations based on the citys own ordinancResidents like Sarge Fran-dse- n, es. Jack Smith and Mark Miller pleaded with the council not to enter into such a development lightly. Councilman Bona assured the homeowners that their property rights and property values would be protected because the city was going to enter into a restrictive contract with the developer. Not only that, but Mayor Christensen assured thd homeowners that the-cithad ordinances to protect them. , Bona reminded residents that they needed to have a vision. They needed to see the big picture. Aspen Village would be a show place for moderate housing up and down the state. Aspen Village would become the model for other cities. Well, Aspen Village is a mess! It has garbage and rats. It is over-bui- lt with homes too big for Luann Anderson, the lots. It is coming, Field Workers & We feel we have a very to the sale the of proposed property' west of the Mt. Pleasant Rodeo Arena. If the City goes ahead with this sale, the prospect of any horse show, future Rodeo, draft horse team pulling, or any other livestock event will literally be choked out. We believe the present administration does not realize what an ideal opportunity we have to develop contestant parking, public parking, warm up areas, and even RV parking along the west boundary, all of which, are extremely necessary to hold a successful rodeo event. Our city rodeo grounds are located in a perfect location, in relation to the city, with excellent access from the highway. We suggest instead of trying to abolish one of the great assets that this community boasts, we begin making plans for a good solid concession stand with permanent restrooms attached. Maybe even a small equipment storage shed that could accommodate a small tractor and other supplies. im- Please, enough with Wal-Ma- rt ship, Freedom from Fear and Want) are works from the Rockwell Museum in Stock-bridg- e, MA. Along with the original paintings, there were many magazine covers displayed. During his long life, Rockwell produced thousands of illustrations for magazine covers, calendars and books. Many showed common people in events of everyday life. It occurred to me that Rockwell would have liked Sanpete County. I dont have any evidence that he ever visited Utah, let alone Sanpete. But I believe that his personality would have fit in here. He liked the small town atmoHe sphere of Stockbridge. liked bike riding. He knew everyone and everyone knew him. Sanpete, in a way, represents the earlier, more simple times depicted in Rockwells art. the Otherwise, Reagan Library and Museum is very interesting. On entering the museum, we heard someone behind us loudly announce, "Im from Utah, the most Republican state in the union!" Regardless of your politics, the place is fascinating with all sorts of exhibits about the Reagan years. Its the only presidential museum with a full scale "oval office". Just for your information, we drove away from the museum in Simi Valley at 1 p.m., Utah time, and were back home in Sanpete by 11 p.m. The Rockwell exhibit runs through May 9. The Reagan Library and Museum is, of course, a permanent, year round attraction. Its a great time of year for a quick trip to the coast. The wisteria and flowers otherwise are gorgeous. Councilman Bona maybe you have the vision for the Frontier Village, but why dont you and Kevin Stallings drop by for a picture of reality. You are both cordially welcome anytime. six-inc- ry Dennis Martin, Mt. Pleasant little good quality and with back take will improvement, seat to no other. We plead with our city administration to scrap their plans for commercial development of the property. We have a very unique and valuable asset just waiting for us to make it blossom. We suggest that if a poll were taken, this administration would find overwhelming support for improving the existing arena, and surrounding area. The Fourth of July Buck-a-ro- o Rodeo last year was just a sampling of how a community can rally together as families and friends and celebrate our most precious resource, our Freedom. This event alone has the potential to be every bit as huge of a success as the Demolition Derby in Fairview, or the Mud Boggs in Moroni. Why? Because it caters to the youth and families in a clean and wholesome environment. We must not ignore this great potential that exists in our community. Kevin and Debbi Stallings, Mt. Weight Loss Puzzles Doctors ATLANTA GA Doctors were surprised when two separate studies found that a natural dietary supplement could help cause significant weight loss. Although not conclusive, both studies found that patients receiving the formula x called 3000 lost more than twice as much weight as those in a control group on the same fat reduced diet. Neither group was instructed to decrease the amount of food they ate or to i ncrease their exercise levels. An article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says that you don't have to decrease the amount of food you eat to lose weight, provided that you limit the fat. According to a spokesperson for Phillips Gulf Corporation, the exclusive North American distributorof x 3000, the company is considering additional studies in order to get federal approval to make pharmaceutical claims. Currently, weight loss claims for the x 3000 supplement are limited. However, with the requisite approval, the company could say dial 3000 decreases sugar cravings, increases metabolism and interferes with the body's ability to produce excess fat. x 3000 is currently available as a dietary supplement and plan in pharmacies and nutrition stores or by calling www.philhpsgulf.com. 3000 it available locally at: Bio-Re- Bio-Re- Bio-Re- Bio-Re- x Bio-Re- Bio-R- 1 aero.
