Show Page Two - The Pyramid - February 24, 1999 Funding goes to priority areas CM by Rep. Mike Styler MP man serves on USS Enterprise Merrill Ogden NORFOLK, VA "This n That" The season change to Spring is more than three weeks away according to the calendar. That astronomically determined date has little to do with the real world. Spring arrived, at least temporarily, over this past weekend. Bees were buzzing in my crocus blooms on Sunday. Daffodils and tulips are pushing up and giving promise of the colors of spring. Its exciting to see that Mother Nature has not forgotten the routine as we round the bend on the winter of 1998-9- 9. We enjoyed the warm day Sunday by opening our southfacing front door for a couple of hours. (Opening the door also gave the benefit of letting smoke escape the house from an overdone lunch.) Of course this is the time of year when it may be Spring one day and Winter the next. So we just take what we get and enjoy it the best we can. Im disappointed that our "first family" didnt come to Sanpete for Chelseas birthday last weekend. Youll recall that we offered a Sanpete alternative to "the Deer Valley thing" here in this column after the Clintons visit last year at this time. Oh well, we can always hope for next year. Speaking of ski resorts, I have heard that my son has made fun of me in his public 17 Feb. in the believe that my ion is the one they are using as an example that they do prosecute in Sanpete County. From reading this editorial it could be from all the heat they have received in the last year for not prosecuting others and the fact that Mr. Blackham is running for as county prosecutor. My son was prosecuted by Mr. Blackham with no physical evidence and just by the word of a third party to the victim who was in another state at the time of the crime. The police did no other investigation. I fully believe that Mr. Blackham and Judge McKiff published I Pyramid, speaking ciass at Snow College. He gave a "how to" speech on "How to Ride a Chair Lift with a Snow Board. He made disparaging remarks about his father, who sometimes rides the lift while simultaneously listening to a personal stereo, reading the newspaper, and eating a snack. The dictionary defines "advisor" as one who recommends oi suggests. It does not say one who makes decisions on public policy. All that HB 139 does is clearly defines the role of public attorney. It does not amend the constitution it does not take away any prosecutorial powers. HB 139 corrects the ongoing confusion in local and state government regarding the responsibility of city attorneys, county attorneys, and the attorney general. For those who think it is about partisan politics, realize that this legislation does not go into effect until 2001 when Attorney General Graham will no longer be in office. I want to explain HB 139 and why I think it is good public policy. This is not a new issue. For years both Republicans and Democrats have expressed concerns about the vagueness of the laws outlining the responsibilities of our public attorney. Current statutory confusion wastes taxpayer dollars by creating debates about who is in charge rather than the best public policy. That may be more textbooks for the classroom or may be an after-schoprogram for those children who need extra attention. The important thing is that the legislature wants those who arc in the classroom to make that decision. Those are just a few examples, .there are others dealing with the removal of disruptive students from - the classroom, more funding for classroom supplies and the passage of a $55 million bond for state capitol improvement projects, much of which will go towards building improvements at Southern Utah University.
