The proposal on focuses salvage harvest of spruce trees that were killed or are threatened by bark beetles. Spanning approximately 10,000 acres using ground-base- d and helicopter logging methods, 70 million board feet will be harvested in multiple timbers sales over a period of five to 10 years. In conjunction with the timber harvest, approximately 23 miles of new road will be constructed; 29 miles of existing roads will be reconstructed; and 15 miles of road used in support of timber operations will be closed and reclaimed. Three existing gravel pits are scheduled to be reopened. An additional 19 miles of road, not needed for project management activities will be closed and reclaimed. "The acres affected and result ing harvest volume of preferred alternative are unusual for Utah. Our actions are compelled by the severity and scope of the beetle infestation, which has resulted in mortality that pose increased risk of wildfire, as well as loss of merchantable timber. Some of these activities will occur within roadless areas which may result in timber sales below cost." explained Kaiser. "The timber harvest is for the future of the forest. Plans are for about 15 million board feet to be harvested by 1997 and the remaining 40 to 50 million board feet to be extended over the next 10 years. Tom Shore, Sanpete District Ranger commented.
