Show "rr Page Two - The Pyramid - April 10, 1996 IM IMI E MTAIRY Merrill Ogden & Calvin Hobbes Speed limits and such We left Sanpete and made a run to Grandma and Grandpas place in St. George for the Easter weekend. Since we were in the neighborhood, we scampered into Vegas on Saturday for the Black Mountain Kennel Club dog show. When I say scamper, thats what I mean. Nevadas posted speed limit is now 75 mph on the freeway. I set the cruise control at a speed which I figured wouldnt raise the hackles of law enforcers. We saw a couple of troopers and were ignored. They had bigger fish to fry. As often happens on that freeway, we were passed by speedsters going 100 mph or so. In any event, we were in glitzville in no time flat. The kids hardly had time to drive each other (or me) crazy. They were too busy trying to focus on the landscape as it flashed by. Utah made some changes with the speed limit during the last legislative session. I suppose that we are still waiting for studies, investigations and expert advice on where and when well get to travel a little faster in the Beehive State. I think, there are lots of freeway stretches in this state that could safely accommodate raised limits. Paraphrasing Senator Blackham, "We want to spend time at our destination, rather than time getting I there." believe Leonard should represent Sanpeters on Capitol Hill for some special considerations. I recommend the following on this issue of speed limits and traffic laws in general: with Sanpete 1) Vehicles registration stickers be allowed to travel 80 mph between Fairview and Thistle. (We may a well legalize what is currently in practice, right?) 2) Farm vehicles, including, but not limited to tractors, swathers, manure spreaders, turkey trucks and pickups with 15 sheep inside the racks, be exempted from signaling turns. (See parenthetical explanation for 1 above). 3) Stop signs in Sanpete be treated as the equivalent of yield signs (see parenthetical explanation for 1 above). 4) Statewide, drivers be required to wear whirlybird type beanies, to be dubbed thinking caps, while behind the wheel. (This law would be repealed when my son turns 17). 5) Sanpete drivers when stopped by officers outside Sanpete County be given a "Scotch blessing" in lieu of a ticket upon the verbal representation that said driver hasnt been out of the county in more than two months. 6) Sanpete drivers when stopped by officers inside the county on the first three offenses be given words of encouragement together with a gift certificate for a burger, in lieu of a ticket. 7) When a Sanpete driver calls in to a designated number reporting a kid IN a safety seat, the caller gets a movie pass and the family with the kid gets a weekend at Disneyland. Enactment of these propositions would be a good start for giving Sanpete drivers the considerations which we deserve. Meanwhile, I think well just have to satisfy ourselves with raised speed limits on selected stretches of freeway... Madsen MANT- I- Spring break is nearly over and there are only six weeks of school left. We are still meeting with eleventh grade students and their parents for the SEOP conference. Those parents who have not arranged a convenient time by phone should have received a note from the counselors office. Students were asked to deliver the notes to their parents. Sometimes parents and students question the need to state a career goal so early in the education process, but this alerts our office to the individual career path. When we have information about scholarship or conference-worksho- p opportunities we can give it to students. An example of this is the Gunnison Valley Hospital Scholarship for seniors interested in a medical related field. We were able to distribute scholarship applications to those students interested in that field, because we have all students listed by grade level and career cluster. At the April 1 Career Fair, 25 fields representing presenters from construction to pharmacy and the Marines to the Air Force were available to students. Several seniors plus eleventh and ninth graders were bused to the site. This provided a sense of containment without distractions. Local presenters were Bob Jensen of Jensens Department Store, Carol Hansen from Eccen-triRyan Anderson and Roger Bird from Zions Bank, and John Irons for the Department of Corrections. Lorna Larsen and Ivo Peterson assisted with the program. Available scholarships are from Gunnison Valley Hospital and Miss Teen of America Program. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has two scholarships for African American high school students.
