Show April 3, 1996 - The Pyramid - Page Three LaVon Coombs honored at 80th birthday dinner Fountain Green The family of LaVon Coombs honored her at a special dinner party held March 22, 1996 in celebration of her 90th birthday at Prestwich Farms, Orem. Attending the birthday were her four sons spouses: Jay and Patricia Coombs, Fountain Green; Boyd and Rae Coombs, Alpine; Gam and Carolyn Coombs, Springville; Doyle and Ann Coombs, Nephi. She is the grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 40 AMPETE IDEE She has been an active member of the LDS Church in all auxilia- ries, a faithful member of the Ward Choir for 50 years, a member and officer of the Uinta Springs DUP Camp, served as secretary of Fountain Green City and Cemetery Perpetual Care Project. A niece and husband: Tom and Glenda Lehmkul; and their daughter Jamie and husband Sam Rogers of Salt Lake City also were in attendance. She was bom March 22, 1906 to Charles W. and Emma Barben Smith in Midway. The family moved to Roosevelt where she was raised and graduated from Duchesne High School. She married a school teacher, Alvin Coombs, on March 9, 1929 and solemnized June 26, 1929 in the Manti LDS Temple and made their home in Fountain Green. He died in 1976. They served an LDS Mission to the South West Indies in 1972. Author John Sillitoe to speak at Snow Convocation p, EPHRAI- M- John Sillitoe, coauthor of "Letters From Exile", will speak at 12:30 p.m. in Snow Colleges Crane Theatre as part of the colleges convocation series. Sillitoe is an associate professor at Weber State University. "Letters From Exile" is about Martha Hughes Cannon, the first woman in die United States to be elected to a state senate office. July 24 of this year, when a statue of her likeness will be placed in the Utah State Capitol Rotunda. Convocations are free and open to the public. During her term in office, she contributed gready to programs in Utah including the creation of the Utah State Board of Health, education of the deaf, mute and blind, as well as several other programs. Cannon will be honored for her service to Utah on MT. PLEASAN- T- Eva Lee Fogelberg, Utah President of Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of Battery D 9276, recently attendconference in ed a mid-yeHouston, TX. Approximately 500 members witnessed an award presentation to actor Dan Lauria, for his efforts to help homeless veterans by assisting in rehabilitation and integration back into productive roles in mainstream society. The attenders heard reports on the organizations service programs from program directors and heard a message from VFW Commander-in-Chie- f, Paul A. Spera, of Attleboro, MA, on issues of importance to veterans and their families. Preserving American heritage, honoring humanitarians, raising funds for cancer research, and in VA medical volunteering centers are just a few of the ongoing community service programs conducted nationwide each year by the 765,283 members of Ladies, Auxiliary of VFW. She is an Early Childhood Education major, and will continue her education at Southern Utah University. The bridegroom is a graduate of Manti High School and has completed his Marine Corps training at Camp Pendleton, CA and graduated from Infantry School with the rank of Private First Class. He is presently serving as a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps Reserves.
