He was born June 18, 1911 in Fairview, Utah, to Hans and Caroline Madsen. He graduated from North Sanpete High School in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, earned a bacand masters helors at Brigham degrees Young University and a doctorate in education at the University of Oregon. On June 3, 1936, he married Margaret Winters in Utah. They settled in Chico in 1959. Madsen taught in schools in Oregon and Utah, at BYU, the University of Oregon and in the music department at Chico State University. He was active in numerous facets of the Mormon Church, two of which were Explorer Scout Leader and member of the Stake High Council. He was also a member of the California Teachers Association, Chico State University Emeriti Association and was president of Utah Music Educators Association and the Northern California Music Educators Association. In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by four sons, Farrell Jr. of Hyde Park, Utah; Neil of Livermore; S. Kent of Placerville; and Dale of Chico; a daughter; Marilyn Huta of Fresno; chings sister, Leah Stevens of Provo, Utah; and 26 grandchildren.
