Arthritis Helps New Approach to Rheumatoid Arthritis: The traditional approach to treating rheumatoid arthritis has been to start with what were considered the least toxic drugs and move into more toxic drugs if disease progresses. However, disease appears to progress more rapidly than had been thought and, therefore, more aggressive treatment at an earlier stage may more effectively limit the damage caused by arthritis. Some physicians are advocating an approach that begins with combination therapy and moves to single-drumaintenance therapy, while others suggest closer patient monitoring and changing of drug treatment when there is evidence of increas-in- disability.
