Show A Poppy Over Every Heart For Our Dead and Disabled In Arlington rests the Unknown Soldier of America and on . his Tomb are flowers, a token of remembrance re-membrance not to the individual but to all the men who gave their lites during the World War. Not every one can place flowers at this Shrine, but we all can wear a poppy on Poppy Day as our personal tribute to every man who died for his country. The poppy is now the memorial flower of the French, British and the Canadian World War veterans' veter-ans' organizations as well as of the American Legion and the American Am-erican Legion Auxiliary. Because of the beautiful sentiment attached attach-ed to the poppy it has won a place in the hearts of the people throughout the world. Last year we sold a few under ten million poppies, while our neighbor, Great Eritain, sold three times that many. Does that mean that we of America are forgetting the war and its horrors so soon? We could scarcely forget. No matter mat-ter where we go we are confronted confront-ed with grim reminders of the past. I In every community there are I widows and orphans of veterans, the dependent families of the disabled and the disabled men themselves to remind us that while the war may be over there are those who still are waging a battle to regain their lost health. Then let us not think of Poppy (Day as just another "tag day," j but as a day set apart on which ' to perform the sacred task of helping the thousands of men whd are disabled because of their service ser-vice in time of their country' need. Another year has passed and with it come:, another opportunity to pay our personal tribute to every ev-ery man who gave his life for his country, by wearing the emblem of sacrifice the poppy. As you pin the poppy on your coat and drop your coins in the little box, do it reverently, remembering that those little red petals symbolize the lives of the flower of our country that were given that you and I I mi:;ht continue to enjoy its free dom. I By proclamation of Mayor W. P. Winters May 28th has been designated "Poppy Day." Everybo-dy please buy a poppy. |
