The Backhoes Will Be Back Hoeing in Old Town By Cornelia de Bruin f you thought traffic was funky in historic Old Town this summer, you ain't seen nothin’ yet. Eric De Haan, the city’s engineer for nearly two decades, says the blocks-long Woodside Avenue project that caused summer headaches for residents is only a warmup for what’s coming next year. Woodside residents and commuters to Old Town will probably be dismayed at the characterization. The street resembled nothing less than a war zone. Monstrous pieces of equipment jockeyed for space within its nar- row confines all summer. The Woodside project, alas, is only the beginning of a series of capitol improve- streets and tearing through others. Point is, if you’re looking for a smooth route through the city’s historic district, you're not going to find one. Daly Avenue residents don’t escape the construction carnage. A big sewer project, which will connect the United Park City Mines’ Flagstaff development to the city’s sewer system, is scheduled for next year. That project brings sewer lines, which of course go into trenches that must be dug, down the length of Daly Avenue in Empire Canyon. Residents of Daly Avenue, who already engage in competition parking along the 19-foot-wide street, will undoubt- ment projects (CIPs) bianned for the Old Town area. That the projects will keep construction workers Einpioyed for years is a cynical edly walk farther than usual to get to and from their homes. : Although De Haan assures residents that traffic won’t be blocked “except for some- “urban noir” look at economics, De Haan points out. The engineer says the projects’ the handwriting is, on the blueprints. times” on Swede Avenue and Marsac Road, number and size are “what all the trades : Motorists savvy enough to know their way publications and economists say is “good around Old Town will likely use a Park for cities.” But he’s quick to add that, “If you : Avenue/Hillside Road route to get in and ~ have to live in it or drive through it, you're: out of the Silver Lake Lodge portion of Deer - probably not going to be so optimistic.” _ Valley ... and points beyond.
