Show says he’s been moved out of intensive care at University Medical Center in Salt Lake City, but remains in serious condition. She also says she and other police personnel who work closely with Ludlow are having trouble getting much work done. They’re being | slammed by near-constant telephone calls from people wishing Ludlow well. “The public outpouring is incredible,” Ford says. “He’s.a really good guy, always gives everybody a fair shake ... this shows how well he’s liked.” -—Cornelia de Bruin Family Affair Gets the Boot “Coffee places like this are like the old time barber shops where everyone gets together and chats,” reminisced one customer in Espresso Brothers’ Coffee Shop. As much a social crossroads as morning eye opener, the friendly Espresso Brothers’ Coffee Shop was the top of the morning for many Park City locals. After seven happy years in the same spot, Brothers’ has to go. Along with the recent additions to Albertson’s, the corporate division decided to replace Brothers’ with a Starbucks, further proof that corporate America lacks common sense—and, perhaps more damning, the basic understanding of small towns and community. As of Sept. 10, the brothers will move to a front entrance off of Park Ave at Cole Sport. Ralph Parson, owner and Espresso Brother, knows that this decision doesn’t reflect the wishes of the local store employees. “Everyone in Albertson’s backs us up,” he says, “all the way up to the store manager. It’s a corporate decision. They don’t understand the synergy of this town.” : The “synergy” of the town is what keeps Ralph looking forward to each | day with java: “It’s easy to go to work when something is this much fun. The people of this town are great peo- ple. There are all walks of life here. I’ve left several places, this place is the tops. This town attracts good peo- ple. ” Through the years they saw it all, including frequent bathrobe-clad customers. Brothers’ attracted people | with their mix of great coffee (a special Portland brand that many claim was the first good coffee in town), good conversation and stock market data that ran on the television behind the coffee bar. Ralph is a former New York stockbroker who keeps his customers in the NASDAQ fold because “stocks stay in your blood.” Conversation was a kind of democracy in action. While waiting for brew, scintillating conversation between customers touched as many subjects as the 22 flavorings for their coffees. The mix of people and coffee was always lively, “This shop became part of a community support,” Parson Says. Not exactly “mom and pop,” it’s. daughter, son, niece and “cousin” Gino running the shop. Sadly, Parson’s brother passed away two weeks ago, “He was my best friend and business partner,” he says. “I’m sorry that he can’t be here for the move. I know he was looking forward (Oe Priding themselves on quality of product, service and hands on management, Parson has definite opinions on how things should go. “There should be a place in the country for the small business for the next 300 years, without the big guys coming in. The small business provides for families ... It’s become too common, the big guys gobble everything up and push the little guy out.” He views the move to Cole Sport as a step in that direction: “We’ll do the same thing at Cole Sport. There’s loyalty there.” And customers will follow him- Starter Castle Profile of the Week _ There is a humble, but relatively solid, old miner’s cabin at the top of Daly Avenue. It’s built on property owned by United Park City Mines Company and appears to equal roughly a double-sized Old Town building lot. The cabin is a small one, but luxurious for its time—it actually has two rooms. A garage is next to the cabin, and a few remnants of outbuildings remain, too. ‘It’s still held tightly enough together that from time to time you can see evidence that people are living in it. Although this hardly approaches current Park City real estate standards, even a structure as humble as this old cabin comes with a potentially high price tag. If the lot were up for sale, a ball park figure for it would probably be $100,000. The “average” Old Town building lot sells for $100,000, depending on a few other factors such as build-ability, steepness of slope and so on. Daly Avenue, since it’s in a steep canyon where direct sunshine virtu- ally disappears cen much of the winter and sweeping views don’t exist, might not boast “average” lot prices. | Nonetheless, there would be a lot price. The other option might be to move the structure to a different oe Moving something of this cabin’s size to a nearby Old Town lot would cost about $15,000, according to a local house moving company. If you already owned the lot, you’d be in Fat City if you wanted to do this at all. | It seems nothing’s cheap at all here, even if you can see daylight between ing up the bean— the boards! there.
