Show THE MOUNTAIN FLOWER MAY 25, 197: In Games Spirit Rests Tradition Of Fellowship By DAVE MUELLER O Id Rather Be in England In Merry, Merry England! With what some might consider an unnatural degree of fervor, and with voices tainted from a liberal application of bubbly d ed, golden liquor, a raucous collection ' of stripe-shi- rt men revel quite loudly in the songs of Olde English Tradition. e Merry, Merry England is a revered part of a of Muckers Park the among rugger Citys rugby football club. The bawdy celebration always includes the days opponents of the Muckers, for in rugby tradition a good side of ale. And never sends the opposition home without a belly-fu- ll alike savor the comaraderie of rugger, the so, winners and losers essence of which is: the beer always tastes just a little bit better after a good tussel on the pitch. In their third full season. Park City Rugby Football Club is becoming known as erne of the champion entertaining sides in the New World. To guzzle less than sixty gallons of brew after a match is almost unheard of in Park City. It is said that on one incredible weekend in the autumn of 72 that 600 gallons of Lucky Lager found an opening down rugger gullets. And the tale is told that the spillage was held to a minimum. ' The Muckers most of who turned to rugby as a way. have made a deterto fight the dreaded syndrome mined effort to follow the teachings of the Scot H.H. Almond, who wrote in the late 19th century: The basic object of the game is to produce a race of robust men, with active habits, brisk circulations, manly sympathies and exuberant spirits. . The same Almond doubted the value of the association . . it gives no exercise to the game (soccer), saying: upper, limbs, and therefore does not tend to the strengthening of the lungs, and the equal development of both sides of the person, as the rugby game does. Therefore, no matter how ragged the Park City side may appear, remember their exuberance. And however ungodly may their behavior seem at times, it certainly can be termed active, brisk, and robust. And in these days of stress and mental illness, do not fail to overlook the beneficial effects of rigorously attaining equal development of both sides of the person. And to the sour apple overheard in a local tavern a day or two ago who had the audacity to make reference to rugby as nothing but beastly fury and extreme, violence, whereof hurte and consequently rancour and malice do remayne with thym that be wounded, wherefore it is to be put in perpetual silence, to that sour apple the Muckers reply in unison: See ya in Aspen (June fixture), Sun Valley (July fixture). Squaw Valley (July fixture), Missoual (August tournament) and Aspen (October tournament). Include our own home matches and the Third Annual Park City Challenge Cup in September, and were going to have quite a summer! Get off your hate trip, buddy. The sweet wine of life never flowed from sour grapes. As of this writing the Park City, club has never been so solid. The roster now numbers in the thirties. With club mastery of ribald classics such as Danny OToole", North Atlantic Squadron, The Hair, Wild West Show, Mary Sue Barnes, favorite, Id Rather Swing Low, Alouette, and that Be in England, the Muckers have established themselves as a side to be reckoned with. It seems that prowess on the pitch improves proportionately with prowess at the party. Perhaps it is a cultural advantage. stout-hearte- post-gam- get-togeth- er off-seas- on pro-ceede- th ff all-ti- 1 CktiDu |
