She hates anyone to touch her, yet cries for it desperately with her eyes. She is cold, aloof and sterile. It is a surprise to find that she has children. He brought together four of his favorite people (who just happen to also be his favorite Harriet Andersson, actresses) Ingrid Thulin, Kari Sylwan and Liv Ullman to play the parts of the four. Cries and Whispers is a film of waiting for death and of how it is inevitable. AGNES (Ms. Andersson) is the dying sister. Tormented by pain and the feeling of knowing she is to die she carries her n thoughts and pain in almost silence until in her death scene when she cries out hysterically for help. ' KARIN (Ms. Thulin) seem- ingly the eldest sister is the most controlled, yet possibly the MARIA (Ms. Ullman) is the sister and the most She is hopelessly child-lik- e sleeping among the memories of her childhood as her sister lies dying in the next room. One of the most interesting cuts on the album, although not really a high point, is Arlos version of THE GATES OF EDEN, the old Dylan song, written when Dylan was piling up rambling images in a way that everybody called poetic. On. this album, Gates of Eden is the link with the mystic drug songs Arlo used to do, songs Arlo's New Album:A Good Mixture 'Arlo Guthries new one, LAST OF THE BROOKLYN COWBOYS picks up where HOBO left off. Hes trying to blend, it seems the 1920s-1930- s sound, the type his father helped form, with the contemporary country rock he himself has done so much to build. I mean, lets face it, when Arlo cut his first album, people like Jerry Garcia and Chris Hillman had all but repressed their Country and Western backgrounds and even Dylan had not yet committed himself. At any rate, on . BROOKLYN COWBOYS Arlo actually includes two of his fathers songs among the 13 recorded. One is a fairly conventional Country and Western treatment of Ramblin Round with steel guitar and amplifiers. Kind of a hip Buck Owens. The other is a version of GYPSY DAVY thats hard to imagine without having heard. Arlo arranges it with marimba and horns, to arrive at something like a synthesis of Doctor John, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and Woody himself. The only problem with this treatment is that the shock of the arrangement might make you overlook the origins, which for this song, particularly, would be a mistake. Oddly, the arrangement, especially the marimba, seems to work. There are also two folk tunes that Kevin Burke adapted and arranged for fiddle. This will probably have appeal in proportion to the listeners taste for fiddle music as a whole. It's. executed and might give you a chance to pick up on something different without really getting more-or-le- ss LULLABY Wouldnt You Believe It like and ' Coming into Los Angeles. Arlo makes the most of the melbut now, eight years afody ter its writing, the lyrics are starting to sound a little flacid. These are probably the ones with the most immediate appeal, funky the same way that. STEALIN, the Gus Cannon song, was funky on Arlos third album. He tries some interesting things here, too. For example, he yodels to a clarinet accompaniment on MISS THE MISSISSIPPI AND YOU, which sounds as absurd on record as it does to talk about. Nonetheless these are all fun songs to listen to. The other five are all original. and, while not among his WEEK ON best, substantial. THE RAG is a piano rag in the tradition of Scott Joplin.
