FLOWER MAY 2g . 1973 PAGE 5 Beehive Union Coordinates Rugby Statewide After six years of strife, the warring factions of the Intermountain and Western Rockies Rugby Unions have put down their arms and consolidated, forming the Beehive Rugby Union. The result has been rapid expansion of rugby in Utah, among clubs, numbers of players and followers of the game. Presently, the Beehive includes four club teams and three university teams among its ranks. At least one new Club team will join the Beehive ranks during the summer season. Salt Lake Athletic Club is the oldest club team in the state. In the past three years Park. City Rugby Football Club, Provo Athletic Club, and the Salt Lake Polynesian Rugby Football Club have joined Salt Lake in the local rugger wars. Ogden will join the exciting clubs for the summer 1973 campaign. Brigham Young Universitys rugby program is the oldest in the University bracket. B.Y.U. plays an enterprising schedule each year, annually counted as one of the top teams in the nation. The Y is capable of fielding three full sides on any given 9-te- ' day. Utah State has progressed amazingly in only three short years. The Logan squad is now one of the strongest in Utah, a real contender for Beehive championship honors. The newest club in the university bracket is, the Univerof Utah. Well into their maiden campaign, Utah has gainsity ed valuable experience in ten matches this Spring. Official Beehive Rugby Union play begins in April and runs An autumn slate is played in September, Octhrough tober, and November, when the University teams form up after a summer layoff. But Beehive club sides wage vigorous campaigns through the summer months. Rarely a week goes by without every club team seeing action. Park City, that cool, haven, is the site for summertime rugby. usually Each year Utah hosts two outstanding rugby invitational tournaments. Brigham Young University sponsors the Western Athletic Conference Rugby' Invitational each April, and the Muckers of the Park City club host the Park City Rugby Challenge Cup. This years Challenge Cup will be September 15th and 16th. Sixteen clubs are expected to compete for the Challenge Cup. In. past years this autumn extraveganza has been a 'memorable event, with clubs from New Mexico, Colorado, and even Australia in attendance.
