Show BEAUTIFUL GOVERNOR DERN inspect fishing possibilities of primitive area the high Uin tabs primitive ara area lea picturesque mounta ineas section ti on about 14 miles so theart of mirror lake set aside bythe govern hibit fast last aar 11 Is des to become one of the important attractions of utah in the opinion of do vernoi george H dern the area consisting of acres in the central part of the aln tan range has numerous interesting geological and scenic features out its major attraction Is that it is to be kept in an undeveloped state that Is as nearly prin primitive daive as possible without undue interference with economic elopement developement dev last week the governor accompanied by foresters members of his family and friends made an extensive survey of the area and came back with glowing reports of its attractions the party found the fishing fair the trails excellent and the scenery Impre impressive dently several of the lakes and topographical features were named on the trip one of the beautiful lakes of the granddaddy Gran daddy group was named betsy lake in honor of the governors daughter one of the specific purposes of the visit was to look over the fishing possibilities of the numerous lakes and streams stream with a view to working out a cooperative program between the state and the government in re stocking the waters some of jf the lakes are barren of fish and others have been almost depleted the U S bureau of fisheries Is now conducting a detailed study and a fish planting program will be worked out when this report Is completed the fishing waters in the area cover approximately acres and include small lakes and miles of stream game Is scarce however due to the high altitude and the lack of winter range around the area it Is estimated that mule deer range there during the summer and that some 35 mountain sheep and a fow few bears make it their home the highest peak towers up to an elevation of feet and much of it Is above the timber line which Is more than feet the plan Is to keep the country wild arld and primitive making only I 1 to maw the points of interest more accessible the governors party on the tour included A G nord supervisor of the wasatch national forest mrs dern dem mr and mrs john dern dem mr land and mrs bruce macleish MacL elsh mr and mrs airs frank A steiner of chicago miss betsy dern J C dick morgan parks forest ranger george cox and earl clyde deputy state game wardens warden s |
