Show students visit morgan business firms write of impressions seventh grade pupils in the social science class taught by mrs betty P stuart have visited several of the plants around town to learn of their opera ions below are stories chosen i by mrs stuart as the best in the class from compositions submitted by the students i THE POTATO CELLAR by rae dell stevens I 1 i the farmers of morgan first owned the potato cellar after a while C it richards bought it and today todal t is owned by hinds the cellar is feet long it originally cost but after it was rep repaired alred the cost was about on each side of the cellar there are bins to keep the potatoes in there are 24 bins in all there Is I 1 a dirt floor in the cellar instead of 0 a cement one because potatoes are best suited to a dirt floor the potatoes are dyed purple and blue before they are sold this Is because they are only sold tor for animal feed and by dyeing them the people cannot use them to in their homes the farmers sell the potatoes to the government tor for every hundred sometimes rats get into the cellar and traps are set no rat poison can be used because of a state law 1 in grading abig the potatoes they are divided into three types they are grade A D B and cull potatoes the grade A has to be at least 1 78 7 8 inches in diameter it if any smaller they are grade B the potatoes with large and other oddities are called cull potatoes there are bliss and russet potatoes the rhe russets which are long and slender blender are the best type they last longer bake nicer and are all mound around the best potatoe pot atoe there Is air conditioning in the cellar to keep out the cold and the heat the average temperature suitable for potatoes is 34 degrees it it is kept at 32 degrees or lower loer the potatoes will freeze in th attic of 0 the cellar where the air condit conditioning toning is there are rocks all over the floor these rocks are first popped like popcorn when 1 they are ready to put on the floor they look and feel like wood THE PRINTING OFFICE by beverly bohman on friday march 31 mrs airs stuart our social science teacher arranged a trip tor for the seventh grade to go to the printing dofice when we arrived we were welcomed and invited in to learn how the printing is done when the news is first sent to the printing otice it is printed on the linotype it is called the linotype because it can print only one line at a time the size of a column in a newspaper after it is printed primed on the linotype the words are printed or engraved on small blocks A slug with no writing on it is ia placed in the linotype this slug makes the N words at the edge of the column straight and it also abo make 4 a space at the edge of the column we saw the iino linotype type work and we were tou told that the linotype would cost about now after it has been printed in small blocks they are placed together to make a page in the paper then they are locked together and fastened in the printing machine the rollers on the printing machine turn around and when a piece of paper is placed on it it rolls the paper around and it la Is printed after the paper Is printed some tines pick the printed paper up and set it on a small table nearby we were each given a copy of the morgan county news as a after we had seen it printed we were shown how bow the wedding announcements are made and also how the pages of the yea yearbook lbook were printed it costs about 2500 a page to print the paper mr and mrs epperson who kindly showed us around gave us each a banana as we left I 1 am sure that everyone in the ath grade and appreciated everything as much as I 1 did THE POULTRY PLANT by deann carter the poultry plant was built by the utah farmers so they could bring their produce in and get paid for it the plant sells the farmers produce and then sends the money out to him they have to keep each farmers eggs separate from the others until they have been graded they receive the most money for grade A eggs there Is also an A and B grade of eggs after the eggs are brought to the plant they are sent to the basement through a little chute the man who works in the basement takes them out of the chute and stacks them then a worker takes them out of the boxes and puts them in a mineral oil the oll oil seals up the pours pours in the eggs so that air wont get in and cause evaporation next the women candle the eggs and place them in the cartons when this is completed ahey pack them in cases and send them to salt lake city in salt lake city they load them on a train and send them to california new york and hawaii |
