We see the gutters full of soft drink cans, sidewalks and streets littered with paper cups, paper napkins, bar wrappers, snack containers of many varities. People who throw these things on the streets must be unconscious, for they know that litter does not pick itself up and place itself in the garbage can. We have litter laws, but who is responsible for their enforcement? Laws are only effective when they are backed by the citizens. When the parents obey the laws, they teach each member of the family to follow in their footsteps. Right now is a good time for us to change our daily routine, open our eyes and actually take note of our surroundings. W hat kind of town do we actually want Our Town to become? Wouldnt it be lovely if for one whole month we could walk down the street and not see one scrap of paper, not one unsightly object1 Everywhere we looked we saw clean gutters, clean streets, lawns, and parkings, tall trees, well trimmed shrubs and flowers in season. This clean, inviting town is very possible if each of us cared enough to build such a town. Lor instance, try this routine: get up tomorrow morning, pick up a litter bag and start down the street, walk down the length of your block picking up each piece of litter as you go, then return to your house by crossing the street and picking up all of the litter on that side of the street, picking up the litter from both the road and the sidew alk . You can now for the first time see a clean street. Isnt it just beautiful? If your street is East Center Street, you will have a bag of litter (but no one will take the blame for helping to litter the street ) If each member of the family would really try this experiment, he will never throw litter on the street again for people to pick up after him. This applies to members of the family in the home. Neat parents make neat family members. It is our home training which guides our actions regardless of where we are. Through careful research we have found that we have seven different kinds of litter The first is, the family puts out the garbage in containers which are not animal proof, and animals such as dogs, scatter the garbage around the streets after it has been put out to be taken to the garbage dump. Source of number two comes from the pedestrians who throw things on the street as they walk along, such as unwanted mail, and food and drink containers. The third source comes from people in cars who scatter garbage when they empty the garbage from their cars into public containers. The fourth comes from business houses who do not take proper care of their containers, packing materials and other litter which tends to accumulate in transacting business. The fifth comes from loading and unloading areas, shopping centers, warehouses, roadside stands and drive-ins- . Source six comes from poorly loaded trucks and source seven comes from construction sites. Although it is not New Year's, it is still a good time to resolve to change our w ays and become a litter aware person who resolves to put litter in its proper place.
