Of the three animals, both the elk and deer have rump patches. The elks tail is very short and almost inconspicuous againsts its rump, whereas the deer's tail is longer, like a rope with a bluck tip at the end. Under many conditions distinguishing an elk Iront a deer or a moose may be more difficult than expected. Many hunters have been, or will soon be, in the stalking that big game trophy. If these animals were in a lineup they would he to easy probably distinguish, hut when you are in the mountains and under varying conditions, it's a different story. You might see a deer and an elk together, but chances of seeing more than one big game species at the same time are not that common. Each year, animals arc erroneously shot because of mistaken identification. Too many moose are shot during the elk hunt because people are not aw are moose are in elk areas. Hunters are reminded several species of big game do frequent the same areas and often only by knowing many characteristics of the animal they are pursuing can the distinction be made with certainty. As mentioned, if the animals were in a lineup the would be distinctions obvious, the moose is the largest and bulkiest of the three, with the deer being blocky but quite a bit smaller, leas ing the elk as the mediumsized animal. Another distinguishing characteristic is the color.
