Each year we enter this contest, and of course some of the good homemakers and civic minded people win awards but there are so many more who could win awards if they just put a little more time into their daily efforts to for surroundings; Fillmore could maintain neat, receive scores of awards. We have six or seven entries who receive yearly plaques to place on their first place award. When they have received five such plaques they are awarded a tree of their choice. The State House Museum grounds, under the supervision of Max Martin, have received these plaques each year for at least fifteen years, others have received them for at least ten years, the County Courthouse, the Fillmore Stake House, the homes of John and Dene Cooper, the home of ArdeU Wright (first received while Tom was still alive, and now ArdeU still maintains her exceptionally attractive yards). Others who have received first place more recently are Duane and Linda Baugh, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Quigley, the Forest Service, Roy and Gloria Tomkin son, Jack and Edna d McBride, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. Jensen (the Jensen's yard is perhaps the most extensive yard among all of the entries, and very beautiful). It is weU worth your time to get permission to visit these very attractive places, another one which will receive first place for the FUlmore entries this year is the Don and Patsy Iverson home. The landscaping is very original and so attractive. Helen Huntsman and I visited these yards and even though K rained, Helen and I stayed and stayed. Don and Patsy have a very unique shelter attached to their home which is just fuU of attractive plants and interesting objects. Fillmore has improved more than most smaU towns, and I am really proud of most of the residents at OUR TOWN, for really making an effort to keep neat, attractive yards with some landscaping and with harmonizing shrubs and flowers. One or two of the sections have gone together and mowed their streets and cut the weeds from the street in front of their homes. If each of us would take just a few hours this week and really try to get our neighborhood neat and clean, I am sure Genevieve Folsom, who is bead of the Tribunes Clean City Contest, would at least write an article about our efforts. Our streets could be very neat if each resident would spend at least three hours helping to clean the street on which he or she lives. Better still, have the whole family help clean the street, since the training is the very thing which will make good citizens for the future. I remember when I was a very small child, Fillmore had no sidewalks nor what you would really call roads, since nothing had been done to them to help keep out the ruts etc. Of course there were no cars and transportation was done by wagons or carriages with horses or other animals to furnish the moving power. During the winter it was so muddy that it took all day to go from Fillmore to Oasis. Everyone had fences and the cattle, horses, and sheep roamed the streets at will. We didnt have a water system until 1910. Before that time cattle and their owners drank the water from the same ditches. When there was a flood, we settled the water in large barrels. We did not have bathrooms until around 1912. I am delighted to have lived to see such lovely dean homes and yards in Fillmore, for I could have lived in any city I chose after Erven graduated from Northwestern University as a pharmacist, as he was offered an excellent job working as a chemist in Chicago. But I loved Fillmore and wanted to come back here to live. I am so happy we did come back as there is no better town in all the world. We have some of file very best people in the whole world as neighbors and friends, and we can live in luxury, if we just work to accomplish our objectives, and continue to have a clean, friendly, beautiful town by working to the best of our ability to accomplish the worthwhile things of life. why" and how to gain and flexibility, strength, aerobic conditioning. 5.
