An awareness of the capabilities of the local facility may help residents decide to use Fillmore Hospital rather than travel elsewhere for health care. Much of what we have is pretty standard for any hospital," Probst stated, but he was quick to point out areas of special interest. Our OB area is changing so we can be more flexible. The labor room is now equipped bed. This makes it with a break-dow- n easier to transport patients to the delivery room. Also new options for labor and delivery are available. Among these options is the birthing room concept. Patients may give birth in the labor room, which is designed to be more like the average bedroom. Also, patients may stay in the labor room for several hours after the birth and then go home. This option may be particularly attractive to patients with little or no medical insurance. All of these options must be discussed with the physician and get his approval, but Fillmore Hospital is trying to be flexible in this area to meet the desires of patients. A fetal heart monitor is now being used during labor to measure contractions and note any signs of infant stress. To further the bonding process between families and the new baby a visiting area in the mothers room has been created and special visiting hours instituted. Brothers and sisters can now visit the new family member in surroundings similar to home. A mother also has the option of keeping her baby with her. To assist the nurses in keeping up on the latest in their field, the hospital has purchased (through donations from the Hospital Auxiliary (Pink Ladies) video equipment few an education program. Nurses can select from a library of video cassettes (made available through Intermountain Health Care) to educate themselves in a number of areas. Staff development is an priority. "Our y Department has grown in the last year and a half, says Probst. We have a licensed radiology technician available or on call twenty-fou- r hours a day. We also have a radiologist in once a week to do some of the advanced radiology. He reads and reports results to our local physiunit cians. There is also portable other members of Marks family in Nephi to celebrate Coe McPherson 84th birthday. There were 57 members family present. The day was celebrated by visiting and getting acquainted with new family members. Probst explains, We treat the majority of emergencies here but we can also stabilize patients and transport them to specialty centers. This is of particular importance during the summer tourist season. The Operating Room is probably the area most local residents are the least aware of. "We can do most general surgery, depending upon the doctors capabilities, such as Caesarian sections, tonsilectomies, appendectomies, D & Cs, boipsies, etc., says Probst. A nurse anesthetist lives in Meadow, and if he is unavailable his partner in We are Nephi comes to Fillmore. always covered for emergencies. There are other types of surgery that can be performed by a General Surgeon at Fillmore Hospital if a patient requests it. If more patients requested this service in the local hospital, more specialists would be willing to come here on a regular basis. We currently have a Urologist and an ear, nose and throat specialist performing surgery in the Fillmore Hospital. The lab, staffed by Gark Packham and Dennis Trimble, handles about 95 of all lab tests ordered. On a busy day this can mean as many as 75 procedures are being performed.
