Show Millard County Progress, Fillmore, Utah B4631 Friday, July 23, 1982 Paaa 3 THE MILLARD COUNTY PROGRESS USPS 446740 Published Every Friday at Fillmore, Utah 84631 By Progress Printing Company PUBLISHER & EDITOR Susan B. Outson LX Marge Barton FIRST I was listening to diffemt groups perform over the T.V. last night and they were billed as musicians, but what they were producing did not sound like music to me. I went to the dictionary to see if such sounds could be call music.' WhenI got through reading all of the definitions of music given in my large Websters Dictionary, I really wondered at some of the sounds which are classified as "Music." The definition I like best is A tone or tones which have any or all of the features of rhythm, melody, or consonance, harmony, general ly as heard in nature or art. Another definition of music: The science or art of pleasing, expressive or intelligible combination of tones. Carlyle said, Music is the speech of the angels." The meaning of song goes deep, who is there that in logical words can express the effect music has on usf A kind of inarticulate, unfathomable, speech which leads us to the edge of the infinite, and lets us for moments gaze into paradise. Addison said, Music is a compound of the stuff dreams are made of, hazy, misty, dim, intangible feelings set to sound. We close our eyes and music takes us captive and carries us away, on the wings of melody. Where painting is weakest, namely: in the expression of the highest moral and spiritual ideas, there music is sublimely strong. Music is neither moral nor immoral, although in association with moral objectives, our emotions may be intensified, so that higher aims may be achieved more readily. Music is a universal language of the emotions, music begins where language ends, thus expressing emotions where language cannot. We can go into any country and although we cannot understand the language, we can thrill and feel our pulses quicken as their National anthem is played, we appreciate the tender pleading of their love songs, the plaintive notes of sadness in a funeral dirge, the lullaby of a mother to her baby. If we understand music we can understand just what the composer is trying to tell us. Everyone can enjoy music but the highest enjoyment is reserved for those who study music as an art and become capable of singing or playing the worlds best music. If you are listening to, say the Philharmonic Orchestra and you suddenly hear a well executed oboe or clarinet solo part, if you have played the oboe or clarinet, you understand how much skill it takes to thrill a radio audience. We learn to read and have our children taught to read because we know how much of the joy of life would be closed to us if we could not read the great literature of the world. Is that also not enough reason for us to study music? The literature of music is a vast treasure house, which also should be another reason for us to study music. If we study music, we get to much more from every day living, it is difficult to be hateful and cross with the children while playing a musical instrument, or singing a song. The average listener gets some enjoyment from listening to a symphony, but with the study of music, the enjoyment is so much greater. It is as if you are looking at a beautiful scene during a fog, when suddenly the fog is raised and the beauty of the scene comes upon you, your joy is beyond bounds. Even if you never become a very good musician, you do become a very good listener and get so much more from listening than you did before you ever studied music. Where was the Millard High Band on the Fourth of July? Who ever heard of a Parade with out High School Bands to fill the air with Patriotic tunes? Lets make sure that never happens again in Fillmore. The Stott Family wishes to express appreciation to the doctors, nurses, aides and other staff members for their care and kindness to our father, Howard Stott, during his stay at the hospital. We also extend our appreciation to all those who sent cards, flowers, and food as an expression of sympathy at the passing of our father.
