We should all learn the conservation pledge and follow its advice: "I give my pledge as an American, to save and faithfully to defend from waste the Natural Resources of my country; its Air, Soil and Minerals; its Forests, Water and Wildlife. I have had 16 groups of Teen Angels, and have taught this pledge to each group. In fact, we gave this pledge each time we met. Why are we so concerned about our environment today, and the utter waste of our natural resources? Because we have had laws protecting our rights since 1901. Let us review for a moment the history of Conservation. When Theodore Roosevelt, one of the nations naturalists, greatest became president of the United States, one of his first acts was to appoint Gifford Pinchot, another dedicated conservationist, to toe position of head of toe Forestry Department. Pinchott was also appointed a member of toe newly created Inland Water Commision, as well as a member of toe Public Lands Commission. Under this administration the very first Conservation Commission in toe world was appointed to prepare an inventory of all of toe natural resources of our country; our public lands, especially toe productivity of its soils, minerals, forests, water, and wildlife. At that time, most of our resources were in toe hands of giant holding companies, owned by J. P. Morgan, Edward H. Harriman, James H. Hill, George F. Baer, and other millionaires. Remember, toe Anti-truLaws all passed during President adminisTheodore's tration. So long as we have government officials who are honest, courageous, and vigorous in their administration of their duties, we are assured of our rights. However, as time passed, after such a promising program instiPresident by gated Theodore Roosevelt, many big industries have been organized whose main objective is toe accumulation of wealth and toe paying of big dividends to toe stockholders. Everybody who owns shares is so busy collecting his share of toe big profits that toe general public has paid little attention to what is happening to our environment. The very small percentage of toe people who belong to these conservation societies, such as the National Council of State Garden Gubs, toe Sierra Gub, and Nature Gubs have done their best to make their voices and get toe heard, general public to conserve our natural resources. We must recycle our tin cans, our paper, and use and reuse our lumber, etc., but easy money made from investments in big monoplies, which control prices, has more influence than common sense coming from people who really care for their Kerrle Snyder: Compositor Shellie Dutson: Paste Up Dixie Talbot: Advertising Jane Beckwith: Commercial Printing st The answer to our problem is toe education of our youth. If parents will just interested become enough to demand that conservation be taught in each grade of school, and that children be taught not to waste paper, food, or anything that is useful, we will soon learn how to make most of our trash into useful articles. We may even learn how to walk a few blocks and become healthier, and besides, we might even save a few gallons of gas. (How I would love to be Roosevelt who loved able to walk even three Nature and toe common blocks! You who can man, was determined that should be so happy!!) these resources should be made available to all of the citizens of toe United States.
