Be sure to make plans to attend this W T-c- fun-fille- d Pi cd with all your former c Maryann Mitchell A Cory Anderson Wedding date set When the irrigation water was turned into the system a few weeks ago, we had a leak in a pipe that ran along the east side of our home and during the night water got into our basement, the ery first time we have ever had that happen, although the home was built over fifty years ago. the Among precious things which were soaked were my original copies of "Milestones of Millard", I felt terrible about it but carefully spread these papers out to dry, (and dont ask me why they are precious to me). As I gathered them together when they dried, of course I read them, before storing them once more in a box on a shelf in one of the rooms of our where they basement, should have been stored in the first place. Since "Milestones of Millard cannot be purchased any more, Ill print a few articles from my "proof reading" copy. CARE OF THE DEAD. Sewing for the dead has always been a labor of love in a Mormon community. At first everything, even their shoes were made by hand. Amelia Webb McRae, Sadie Bartholomew, Mol-li- e Carling, Mary Jane Eliza Starley, Kelly, Marinda Bennett, Hannah Huntsman, Lizzie Carling, Hattie Carling Critchley, Jane Crapo, and dozens of other wonderful seamstresses, sewed for the dead, and even sewed for the relatives in order that they would have something black to wear to the funeral, for the family black wore always clothes, the older members of the family wore black hats and veils. At first the caskets were just crude boxes. John William Gibbs, Powell and James King were some of the first casket makers. According to Isabel Rogers, the first were caskets shaped Harriet by suggested Payne, mother of William (Bill) Payne, Josephine Greenwood, Maude Hanson and Mayme Payne. She suggested that the the groove carpenters side pieces, sawing just part way through the lumber. Then she dampened the sawed parts and heated them with a hot iron, so that the pieces curved around the braces. Jarriet helped with the staining of the wood as well as the trimming of the inside of the caskets. Later Alex Fortie made the caskets and his wife, Annie Laurie Tomkinson Fortie, did the trimming, with the help of their Margaret daughter, Fortie Trimble. Joseph Seguine purchased the Fortie Casket making Lizzie business and McMahon Payne, who became an expert casket trimmer, assisted Mr. Seguine. Lizzie was also an excellent seamstress and dress maker. George Finlinson, who came to Fillmore with the John Ashman family, was the first sexton. Others who helped in the digging of the graves were: George Greenway, John Bowen, John (Stonewall) Jackson. The next sexton was Jesse Milgate, who had the job for many years and was sometimes assisted by his Simeon Nichols. At first there was no regular conveyance for carrying the dead to the church and later to the cemetery. The use of the buggy or wagon was more or less done by volunteers. John Bowen was the first to offer his buggy for this service, as a regular free service. Edward Davies who had a well matched team, well cared for harness and wagon, gradually took over this service. After a number of years, the city purchased a white topped buggy, which was used as a hearse and left in the care of Edward Davies. He always dressed in a black, swallow-tailesuit, white shirt, black tie and black hat. His hearse is kept in the basement of the State House Museum, as a tribute to this faithful man who did this service for years, with no remuneration but the good will of the entire towns people. was Jesse Milgate followed by John Davies, Murray Davies, and Arlo son-in-la- Mr. and Mrs. Orman W.
