East for L. Kent Mays, Jr. Deputy Regional Forester QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS one-tim- ed about our mountain lion population especially this year. We are having more and more small female cats taken. This may be welcomed by a few livestock operators and deer some misguided hunters, but our lion population is a resource needing protection. There are several counties in that are out of lions simply because of a over harvest by individuals wanting a lion rug or wall mount no matter its size or sex. Besides our local lion hunters we have had hunters from as far north as Brigham City and as far south as Kanab with one profes- sional guide bringing in hunters from all over the United States. These out of area hunters stay for days until they bag a lion not too concerned with size or sex of the lion. are the are the hunt rather than the kill. To them the sport is fun and exciting. To the professional guide a lion is money, $2,000 to $3,000. To the New York dude a lion is a conversation piece that cost him $3,000 no matter its sex or size, We are now at a critical time in management of our lions, with the creased pressure from hunters, professional guides and rich dudes all coming into our area, killing a lion and then leaving. Just as our deer herds were over shot and killed off, I have a feeling that we are fast approaching the same problem with our lion population, My 1983 recom- mendation was for taking of only mature, male lions in Millard County. Instead of the past regulation of either sex. Notice to Water Users 743-570- The first public high school in the United States was opened in Boston in 1821.
