Each when finished became a lavaliere, a setting for a ring or paper weight. These priceless ornaments he gave to us children. He gathered the stones from the mines in the Fillmore mountains. We children of the neighborhood loved to visit him. He lived in a small red room, large enough to contain his bed, a table, a chair and a small, round cast iron stove. The front door opened right on to the sidewalk. Back a few rods, through the raspberry bushes, the path led to the main house. Aunt Columbia and aunt Sadie lived in the main house. Uncle Reuben went into the main house for his meals. Columbia was his first wife and Sadie, Columbias sister, was his second wife. The Government made a law against polygamy, thus Reuben could not live with his two wives, thus he built the little red house and there he lived, but they seemed to be happy. It was my delight to visit both families. Aunt Sadie always had a crock filled with lovely cookies to give to children who visited them. I am remembering what happened when I was nine years old, and I am now sixty-nin- e years old. By Ruth Zmitravich and Beulah Berry Friday, April 23: Homemade chicken soup and strawberry pie. His interests seemed to be in minerals and mining but nothing ever came of it, at least nothing is recorded from that interest. He was a self educated lawyer, a civic leader, held office in the city and county, there. On April 30, 1860, he was set apart by the LDS Church to serve a mission to England. He returned September 1, 1862, since the Gvil War was on and all missionaries were called back to Utah. It was so amusing to see that little bunch of white whiskers on his chin, not too long, and another bunch on his upper lip. The one on his upper lip looked a little yellow on one side. I can close my eyes, force my thoughts back through the years and sense myself back standing by his table, near him with my hands folded behind me, watching him polish those beautiful stones. No one ever gave him money for them, which made me sad. So I gave him a nickle one time, and when he looked up and reached to take the nickle, I knew he was the handsomest man in the world. How a man with white hair and whiskers could make children so happy wasa wondw to me. It must have been because he was good inside him.
