Dutson FILLMORE Marge Barton by STELLA DAY Remember we are on a which takes us from Utah, through Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, to St. Louis, Missouri, where we became passengers on a chartered bus which holds forty-fiv- e passengers, however our hostess will not have over thirty-nin- e passengers as she wants room for passengers to take a nap or change seats once in when they desire. Although most of the passengers were members of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, at least a dozen of these ladies were with their husbands, therefore we stayed in St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida, for several days to watch s, the Big League since Florida is the state in which many of the Big League baseball teams do their practicing in readiness for the regular season. Since my husband, Erven Day, was a real fan of the Big Leagues, he made me promise I would watch certain teams play, purchase a program and mark every play, in order that he could enjoy the game from the program. He watched them on T.V. in the summer but they never broadcast the practice games. I was surprised how much the women enjoyed these games. At night in these cities, world famous fashion designers, stage fashion shows, displaying their creations on the most beautiful women. Even though some of the gowns cost more than our husbands made in a month, we all loved seeing these gorgeous creation, especially in the famous Pink and Gold dining room of the Edon Rock Hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida. While in this section of Florida, I have chosen two special sacred buildings, trip ball-game- each with an interesting history which has to do with our philosophy of life. First, the famous Mountain Lake Sanctuary, about fifty miles from Tampa, Florida. In the center of this Sanctuary, and on the highest spot in Florida is built the Bok or Singing Tower. It was built by Edward W. Bok, a very famous writer and publisher, whose grandfather transformed a grim desert island in the North Sea ten miles from the a into Netherlands, breath-takin- g bower of flowers, shrubs and trees, which is famous as a bird sanctuary. The grandson of Edward W. Bok, wanted to build a sanctuary where man could come and find himself, since it is so easy to get lost in this world of greed and turmoil. The sanctuary provides a retreat of natural beauty for the troubled mind, a study of southern plantings, and a harmonious setting for the Singing Tower, where natures healing beauty and the music of the Carillon bring peace of mind and inspiration to the weary. The building is of stones of pink marble with a frieze showing pelicans, herons, and the fabled characters of the goose and the fox, the hare and the tortoise. The marble grill of the west window, reveals a man creating a garden and the east window depicts a youth feeding cranes and flamingoes from a basket on his arm. High in the beautifully carved tower are the Bells of the Carillon, graduating in size from the large Bourdon bell or tenor bell which weighs 23000 lbs. to the smallest bell which weighs eleven lbs., these 71 bells hang in five levels and cover a range of four and one half octaves, whose scale is entirely chromatic from the larger bell note which is E flat. When we were there Anton Brees was the and the world said of him, Bells the people of America had heard but never the music of them. It was as if you had only heard the human voice talking, and suddenly you heard the beautiful tones of a famous singer, when you heard Anton brees play those bells. Each year a beautiful Easter Service is held at this Tower, and each year the Boy Scouts of America hold their Annual Boy Scout Camporee here. There are hundreds of beautiful churches in Florida, but the most outstanding one is the Memorial Church. One cant go to Florida without hearing the story of Henry M. Flayler. he was the son of a poor Presbyterian minister, who left his home when he was fourteen and went to Ohio to work for L. D. Harkness, a granin buying and selling company. His salary was $5 a month and his board. By the time he was twenty years old, he was made manager of the company and had married Mary Harkness, the daughter of the owner of the business. He went to New York, met John D. Rockefeller, went into business with him, and made millions of dollars. He and his wife, had one child, Jennie Louise, but his wife had very poor health. Jennie Louise married E.C. Benedict, a New York banker. They all decided to move to Florida to help the health of the mother. The mother died and then Jennie Louise, the daughter, also died, shortly after having a baby. Henry M. Flayler saw the futility of just making money. He began building churches and developing Florida, especially St. Petersburg. She said this supplemental medical insurance is available to all Senior Coalition members 64 or over who wish to supplement their Medicare coverage. The insurance is underwritten by Equitable Life and Casualty Insurance Company, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Ms. Wakieysaid. The rate is guaranteed to be S34.68 a month for 1982 for persons in the 64-7- 0 age bracket. Ms. Wakley said the medical insurance gives immediate coverage for health conditions and will cover the $260 deductible for hospitalization not paid by Medicare. It also pays the 20 deductible not covered by Medicare, Part B, at 20 of actual costs. Ms. Wakley, a licensed insurance agent, stated the original enrollment period had only been during Nov. and Dec., but because of the initial success of the program, the Utah State Coalition of Senior Citizens and Equitable Life and Casualty Insurance Company agreed to extend the program for the ten weeks starting in Jan. to allow additional senior citizens to enroll.
