Dutson R Marge Barton Ktrrit Snydar: Our Town Fillmore v, By , Stella Day The longer I live, the more reasons I find for a better education for all of us. It doesn't matter that your children are all married with families of their own, you still have to live and take part in the activities of life, take an active part in the government of your town, state and nation. Each senior citizen should give freely of his or her lime toward improving our town, state, nation, and the whole universe. Each of us has some special talent which we should share with others; this not only improves our talent but it helps make a better life for others. I fully believe that the time will come when the law will require each person who receives Social Security, and is in good health, to spend so many hours each week doing some public service. Certainly some other method of financing Social Security will have to be initiated or the government will be bankrupt. The people demand more services from the government continually and if we are to continue to demand more services from our government, we will also have to be willing to pay for these services through labor or cash, since the government is not in business to make money, nor can it continue to enlarge the National Debt. We change our concept of every day living faster than we make the money to afford all of the conveniences we think we have to have in our daily lives. The citizens of Fillmore lived for at least 60 years without paying any utility bills. In 1910 the city installed a water system, inaugurating the first utility bills. Eight years later in 91 8 the city signed a contract with the Telluride Power Company to supply electric power for OUR TOWN, and the first power line was constructed over the mountain from Richfield. Now the citizens could install electric stoves washers, flat irons, vacuum cleaners, electric lights, etc., etc. The pioneers never dreamed of such luxury, such easy living. The roads and sidewalks were still just mud and ruts and load of gravel mixed in the mess, when along came the automobile. I well remember the first automobile that came to Fillmore and the whole town was out to see it ; of course many people had seen automobiles in Salt Lake City but most of the old residents had not seen one up close before and the road was crowded with spectators. Now finished roads had to be built which required thousands of dollars. Our way of life was becoming complicated. Much more money was required in order to pay for these new improvements. Up to now, very little money was required to raise a family, but now more taxes and utility funds were needed, together with television sets, furnaces, lights, stoves, vacuum cleaners, dozens of electric gadgets, to say nothing about trucks, autmobiles, mowers, tillers, machines of all kinds. In fact everyone needs a special education in order to operate the machines and computers there are to do work which used to require the services of many workers in order to do the work one machine can do now. All of the old houses had to be remodeled since no one had a bathroom, since there was no hot water until mother put the boiler on the stove and heated the water for the weekly bath. She also had to heat the water to do the weekly washing in a washer which had to be turned by hand. There were very few paying jobs in small towns such as Fillmore, which meant that 1 Continued to Page 6 SalesSales Management Lets Suppose... This will leave us a balance of nearly $40,000 to raise locally to complete the building. Some of our communities have already raised most of their allotments, the church policy on building is very definite. Their matching funds are not available until the donated funds are in their hands. New Fifth Grade T eacher At I REFLECT THE BEST A second drive for hospilal funds is progressing salisfacorily in the nearby communities and will begin in Fillmore soon. The reasons for the second drive was explained in a letter sent lo residents: In part, it read: It was originally planned to build the smallest possible hospital unit with a capacity of about 1 5 beds, with the most meager administrative facilities. This money w as lo be raised by taxing units, but this was found to be unconstitutional and contrary to Church policies. So a subscription drive was launched and within a weeks time $36,500 was raised for ihe it was that this type unit peoples share of this building. However, as plans progressed, would not be satisfactory. Also during this planning period, building costs have advanced very levels as was anticipated. So now the unit materially instead of dropping back to or near pre-wa- r that is being built, which has a minimum capacity of 26 beds and a maximum of nearly tw ice that Don Probert cnov INVITATIONS BY STYLART 35 years ago -- November 24, 1947 60yearsago-Novtmber2- amils ol OUR Mr. and Mrs. Dix Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Probert were among the County board members who attended the State Farm Bureau convention in Salt Lake City Nov. 14 16. will be Ironuheold scrapbook Integrity - Something which keeps a person I ront pulling ihe best Iruilal the lop ol the basket. hcrogress Nov. 26, 1982 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hatlon residence, 130 South 2nd West, Send Address Changes to 507 Fillmore Utah 84631 ByRuthZmitravich Monday, Nov. 29: Pigs-Wednesday, Dee. 1: Roast pork.
