Lt C'otmicMarten tn Dr Km fcell I had no ttlea bow kmg ago a really was thai I Lut wrote my column Indeed May was spent traveling and in June I caught up on my shift dune Saw some of my friends m Delta on the afternoon before heading West for my nights at our various fluorescence detectors And then' W hat would be my eccuse for July which passed without a word from me You are probably not even wondering any more as you will likely have returned the favor by now and given up on me just as I seem to have I on No have not given up you And yet I must admit to procrastinating hcav ily This one is a very hard column to write for me As you can see am still hesitant to get it out put it m print but the reality of it stares at me from every angle here in my basement in Salt Lake where big parts of our lives are boxed up already My family and I will be moving accepted an offer to become Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo's brand new Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe IPMU m Japan in that new position ! will be working in the same underground Kamioka mine again where i was doing research before came to Utah and the U S The weighty matter of Dark Matter will be the subject of my new research We will be building a new experiment to see if we can find the elusive particles that we think roust be the constituents of Dark Matter Building new experiments is a lot of fun and difficult challenges w ill have to be met to succeed The technology we will be using m that mine m Japan is quite a bit more involved than what we are doing bere in Millard County although there are similarities too We will cool down Xenon to get it to become a liquid and then use that liquid as a scintillator Just like we do at the scintillators inside those hospital bed shaped surface detectors that my colleagues and deployed all across your desert the the of out Xenon scintillator will be converted by photomultiplier light coming tubes to an electrical signal that our computers can understand Given the very different nature of the physics question we are asking with the Xenon detector ill w be its operation very different though for starters we have to be as far away from cosmic rays as you can get Hence the mine So will be moving on to build a new experiment on the other side of the W hat is the use of building an planet experiment'’ Just to build an experiment? No the use of building an experiment is to get data that will tell us something important about the world we live in Telescope Array is taking data now and will continue to do so over the next ten to twenty years So what is the use of me helping to build that detector if bail now? Do not want to know the answer to the questions that drove us to strain through summer beat and winter cold to put these detectors out there-- Yes I do want to know the answer Japan is the main contributor to the Telescope Array Project and at IPMU I will be right next door to my colleagues from ICRR the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research at the Umv ersity of Tokyo So w hat would be more natural then me continuing my work on Telescope Array w hile helping to build the new experiment'’ Human natuie is more natural My new colleagues at IPMU did originally not want to hear about me doing anything but help to build the new Xenon detector which they promised their government would be ready next year It needs all hands on deck to achieve that goal In the end it turned out that lot once my innate German stubbornness came in handy and now i will get the best of both worlds will get the excitement of the new toy oops experiment i meant to say and get to keep my old experiment too1 The plan is that once a year I will be coming to Delta for probably about two weeks My colleagues from ICRR the University of Utah and collaborators from other institutions will of course continue to improve and operate the detectors to collect previous data on cosmic rays unfortunately from now on mostly ithout me I will miss Delia and my friends both in your midst and here at the University of Utah So now we could start a completely new column with a scary title like The Dark Matter Underground column W uh all the new things rolling towards me ov cr the next months doubt ery muc h that it w ould be w tse to promise anything like that But in the spirit of the current column the question has to be asked What is Dark Matter? Just as with the cosmic rays the answer ts We do not know Just as w ith the cosmic rays we see it but we do not know what it is But unlike with the cosmic rays we see Dark Matter only on very large scales not Uxally like we do tbctO'jpic rays raining down on Millard County If wc were to see tbemloffilly mW Underground experiment for the first time be great new the kind of news that could produce Nobel prime! We see it in the motion of stars in galaxies So how do we see Dark Matter’’ the motion of galaxies m galaxy dusters and in the way matter is distributed throughout the universe In other words we see it in it effects on the matter that is like the stuff that you and me are made of on distance Kales of order galaxy or larger Dark Matter is the (second) biggest fundamental puzzle in modern physics Last semester taught a course about the Universe and Dark Matter loomed is the part large tn it Daik Matter literally is the dark side of the Universe it that does not ihme Start shine which means that they radiate light into the surrounding space tven cold planets radiate invisible light the same kind of light that night vision equipment detects and shows when it lets you see the animals m the pitch black of night (When we see planets of our solar system m the night sky though it is not this invisible light that we see it by What we see is the starlight from the sun that is reflected off the planet's surface ) Anyways normal matter absorbs and emits light Daik Matter does not So how do we know Dark Matter is there? Grav nation is the answer On the Kale of galaxies and beyond meek little grav tty reigns unchallenged Here on earth you can use a simple magnet to humble gravity Big magnets in a junkyard easily overcome will of gravity here the metal pile should stay Astronomers watch the matter and tally the way it move revests that there up how much there is and how it moves And must be much more mass than there is matter if matter is the stuff we are made from Dark Mass would be the less confusing term to use for what by habit we now call Dark Matter And what would he the (first) biggest fundamental puzzle in modern physics? Dark Energy Like Dark Matter it is very there but even more out ihereAs far as Dark Energy is concerned we have no idea yet as to what to look for It will be looking for may well be that Dark Matter is not the kind of particle we in our mine in Kamioka Yet if our new experiment really sees nothing then that ia still an answer: Dark Matter in nature is not the kind of particle that our detector would see We will need a different kind of detector to find it Other candidates that could not be seen with our Xenon detector exist and are well motivated and detector are being built for these other possibilities also In the cave of Dark Energy we physicists currently do not know where to begin Now let me finish this last column with a warning In the utterly unimaginable case that there should live a creature vile enough to consider popping a cork on the occasion of my departure let me counter with the equally vile threat I w ill be back! With or w ithout answers on Dark Matter As usual comments and questions are welcome at martens ka I'q gmatl com the Samuel Johnson generous in their contribution The number of helpers from the three
