and Collection Day Pnulson LSU Extension b rait Agent Salt Cedar or Tamarisk was introduced to the US from Asia in the late 1800's It was first used as an ornamental and later to control streambank erosion which was a big mistake Since being introduced tamarisk has invaded millions of acres of riparian habitat displacing native vegetation and destroying wildlife habitat Due to its nature and its ability to withstand and recover from fires floods and other natural disasters coupled with the lack of any natural enemies tamarisk has effectively taken over Now along many streams tamarisk grows in a monixulture meaning there is no native vegetation left he other problem with tamarisk is associated with its water consumption and its salt tolerance Many people hear that tamarisk uses much more water than native vegetation thus causing decreased stream flows This is a bit of a misconception In studies the water consumption of a particular tamarisk plant compared to a willow that is comparable in sue is actually very similar The ditlerence arises in the fact that willows typically live only very near the tual stream because their roots are much shorler than those of tamarisk What happens with tamarisk is that its roots go much deeper so it can live much farther from the stream channel where it displaces native shrubs and grasses And tamarisk docs use much more water than these native shrubs and grasses do So it you consider the acreage tliat tamarisk infests as compared to what the native willows and cottonwoods inhabited altogether tamarisk is consuming much mote water simply because it tnlests much larger areas Also because of its nature tamarisk carries salt up from deep in the ground and secrets it at the soil surface making the soil too salty for many native plants hese are have talked to producers that have just a lew ol the concerns with tamarisk had pastilles and meadows overrun with tamarisk This has drastically cut the availahle forage lor their livestock Because of these factors and many more it is important to control tamarisk he Millard ( ounty Weed Board the Millard ('imperative Weed Management Area and 'SU Lxtension would like to help all of you landowners that have tamarisk problems We have a great resource here in our County that we should take advantage of About 5 years ago received permission to lease a biological control agent for tamarisk in the US Ten sites were selected in the western US and one of those sites is located in Millard County near the dry Sevier Lake Since the initial release in 2001 the Beetle has defoliated more than 1000 acres of tamarisk surrounding the initial release site This is a great success and we would like to spread it through the county During the last couple of years people all across the state have come to collect these insects and have taken them to more that 100 other sites across the stale We can do the same thing here in Millard County moving beetles up the Sevier River We are planning an education and collection day on the 13th of July We will meet at the xtension office in Delta (83 S Manzamta Ave) at 8 00 in the morning where we will briefly discuss the beetles and any questions or concerns anyone has At 9 00 we will head out to the initial release site to view the damage W bile we are out there we will also have time to collect these beetles After you have collected as many as you want you can return home and release them on your properly Because of federal regulations these beetles can not be released on Federal property but it is perfectly legal to move them to private property I or collection there are a few things you should bring with you Drinking water (it will be hot) Sunscreen long sleeved shirt wide brimmed hat and other sun protection (doves ive gallon buckets with lids some people have modified their buckets by cutting a hole in the bottom and attaching a burlap sack to the bottom of the bucket with duct tape This pretty much eliminates the need for a lid during collection In the past collection has been Fairly easy as both larvae and adults can easily be knocked into the bucket by simply slapping the branch down on the top ol the open bucket This is one of the best biological contiols that have ever seen however as is true with all biological controls these beetles will not completely destroy all the tamarisk What we hope for is that these beetles will slow the spread of the tamarisk and thereby enable us to more effectively fight the tamarisk through other means Once you know where the site is you are welcome to go collect more beetles any time you want II you have any questions regarding this program feel free to contact Craig Poulson at the xtension oflice or ugust I Immunization (lime - 5 Health Dept p back then years ago would have agreed have in my opinion some of the best greens in the state have a couple of good friends that are Green’s Superintendents and when tell them what heads in disbelief things that get done to our greens here they shake their asked both of them if they raise the blades on their mowers when they top dress greens with sand and both laughed and said if they did that they would lose all their play They said they never adjust the height of the mower blades but it keeps the golfers hey sharpen the blades and yes this takes a little time that if your greens don t roll good happy and coming back They both agreed the world you maintain an 18 hole you lose play They also wonder how in ithout a lull time superintendent Why don’t we have a full time gull course a superintendent at Sunset View Someone that knows what maintaining golf course is all about Vou hired a golf pro but in reality the county took control Ten we did everything so he's basically ust a county employee he county should have stayed out of that end of the golf business A golf busiprofessional goes through many years of school and training to run the let him be one Della's high school ness You’re paying him to he a golf pro so golf team this fall has the talent to contend for a state championship It’s too bad they don’t have better greens to practice on Practicing on slow greens and then playing faster grccns(whtch all the other courses they will play have)wtll add 5 to 10 strokes to a round That is a big disadvantage come time to play at slate hope the problem ts corrected before fall Those of you that say this is challenge you to do just one person's opinion have some bad news for you another survey and see the results for yourself An unhappy golfer at Sunset View Blair Maxfield ol Water Rates Mayor and City Council Our water rates have been going up the last few years due to drought we having but for the last two years We have been seeing our water creasing w your bill for that very reason We don’t mind paying more when we need to (when we are in a drought) but when we are not in a drought you need to give us our money back"1 That would be fair and what is fair is (air is lair THEN you can start talking about said we (the public) don’t mind paythe arsenic problem we are having like ing more when we need to but we also want you to refund us when we don’t
