Show Rose Saga Font page Continued house other Mexicans who were also occupying the place in order that a careful search could be made The Mexicans sent from the house were guarded on the outside by Waters There were three rooms in the house and Rico was located in a cellar under the third room Sheriff Black and Rose went through the first two and into the third A large trunk covered the floor over the cellar This was removed Rose stooped and removed a plank from the cellar entrance As he did this Rico who was in the cellar armed with two Winchester rifles a and a t through the floor and wounded Rose in the knee Rose and the sheriff then both commenced firing in the cellar and Rico fired several shots The sheriff emptied his pistol and after the firing ceased it was thought perhaps that Rico had been killed and Rose who was then suffering from his wound started to leave the house He had much difficulty in walking and sheriff assisted in getting him from the house After they got out of the house Rico emerged from his hiding place and on reaching the door shot Rose out of the sherifFs arms the bullet taking effect in the hips Rose fell to the ground and the sheriff sought cover nearby to reload Rico then came out of the house and started for another building As he did Rose sic another shot at him with his pistol and the Mexican returned the fire with his rifle striking Rose under the right arm and the bullet passed through the lungs near the heart On reaching the other building Rico turned on the sheriff but before he could fire Waters shot him with a 45 calibre magazine pistol Rico with his two rifles and a cartridge belt with over 100 rounds of cartridges was unquestionably a dangerous foe for men armed only with pistols and it became the part of prudence to send up town for rifles In the meantime Rico began his retreat He went east along the canal partly protected by the sagebrush The men with their pistols could not rush him but from protected places kept in sight of him and fired whenever an opportunity presented As Rico treated a lew hundred yards from the factory he met Truest Blackburn with his wile and two children coming to town in a wagon He stopped them and said to Mr Blackburn “I ought to kill you they are after me You have a wife and two babies have a wile and two babies Don’t tell them you saw me" As Mr Blackburn drove off he said he pected every moment to feel a bullet crashing through his head The news of the killing of Rose spread like wild fire in town and practically all the rifles m the hardware stores and in the homes of private citizens w ere brought into use for the purpose of the hunt Automobiles and trucks loaded with armed men set out in haste to aid in rounding up the murderer To prevent all possibility of escape men were sent far out in all directions so as to completely surround him on every side and then draw steadily in towards his supposed hiding place The work of gethanting in for the final attack was dled well and Rico was kept in sight by some of the guards nearly all the time until he reached the headgate on the canal w here hid and w here he w as finally killed As soon as rifles were available some of the most daring men could not wait for gradual approach but went hastily towards the headgate where Rico was in ambush And the great wonder is that he did not kill several of his pursuers Most likely the shot he had received from Waters made it difficult for him to act effectively with his rifles but he did shoot several times Finally a small number of the posse approached close to w here he was lying and as Rico raised trom his biding place close to where he was lying and as Rico raised from his hiding place to shoot the men lired first and shot the top of his head
