that is not only fun to watch hut there is something tor the whole lannlv to do from age to 93 Fven people who don'l own equipment can participate and have a good time This could be the ultimate interactive Dear lelelur and Michael wedding opt house 7 aol ilv As we enter this second week of August we begin to realize that il is only five weeks till autun n The observing conditions for both July and August have not been favorable due to the atmosphere being so unstable The hot humid air make observing through astronomical s cry distorted especially with apertures exceeding four inches and magnifications above 50X This especially true in the early evenings as our planet Earth cools from the hot afternoons that heat up anything solid such as asphalt concrete and metals close to an observing site A partial solution to this problem may be to observe in a grassy area or over a pond or lake that cools much faster and better yet to limit observing after midnight to minimize turbulence Bright objects such as the moon or planets are not affected as much but trying to observe faint nebulae star cluster or the distant galaxies w ill be hectic in the eyepiece During this week our moon reaches its First quarter phase on Thursday the 15th at 04 15 hours and rises at 14 44 in the afternoon It sets close to an hour after midnight which also interferes with deep sky observing It may be best to spend some time looking at the moon since there is only one planet observable tn our western sky and that is Venus that portrays an uninteresting object at best since it lies so close to the horizon For the av id that w ishes to stay up past 01 00 hours or later into the next day the constellation of taurus “The Bull" makes its appearance over our eastern horizon at 01 hours followed by Orion “The Hunter" around 02 30 hours and finally Cams Major "The Great Dog" shortly after 04 30 hours All three of these constellations offer a wealth of deep sky objects along with some interesting stars groups Since weather conditions and a moon that is getting larger and brighter with each passing day it may be best to discuss w hat can be seen prior to it reaching its "Full" phase when little detail can be seen due to brilliance and contrast The photograph to the right is a prime example of the craters mountains and dark mares (seas) that become isible w ith magnifications up to In reality mote can be about seen with the eyes through a telescope than in the photograph due to the limitations of this newspaper printing The moon at first quarter phase using a 60 mm (2 4') refractor and an eyepiece yielding about 45X magnification With increasing aperture and magnification more subtle detail of the moon can be seen and craters within craters can be seen Deep valleys and mountain peaks can easily be discerned as the eyepiece magnification is increased Aperture creates the ability to resolve craters more readily and what may appear as one crater may in reality he two or more craters The photograph at the right shows a smalt area of the moon at high magnification This photograph was taken with a 250 MM (10”) SCT telescope utilizing an eyepiece yielding 333X Note the mountain peaks and small craterlets Distinct shadows cast by the mountains can easily be seen in the large crater in the upper portion of the photograph ntil next week we may well have to be content with just being moon watchers Ihc "I ull" moon occurs on the 22nd and we will have to wait until the tail end of this month to do any deep sky observing ev ent better for e ate looking for Iced luck both positive and negative on how to make luturc to be ol bene tit to the air and riliist ot all to all the people who live here here are those who wonder win people play with old tractors and equipment and a live piece of history - the transition from like to exhibit them Die tractors repicscnt horse power to tractor power and how has affected all of our lifestyles As drive some m glad
